Cadfael had come down the the clinic because it was one of the nurse's birthday and there was going to be a surprise party for her. What an interesting idea. Hiding and yelling "Surprise!" at a person and then having refreshments. The surprise party is at the lunch break... Which has been moved to after Cadfael observes Sext so "he can eat with them". In reality, the nurse who's birthday it is happens to be Catholic and will be distracted by the monk while everybody else sets up the party in the lobby.

Connor came into the clinic, in the hopes of finding Cadfael. Look! There he is. In a party hat. That was...interesting.

Cadfael looked up from his contemplation of the VERY sweet birthday cade.

"Hello there Connor. How are you this morning?"

It did in fact seem strange.

"I know the blessings Connor, and I can say the words, but as I said I'm not a priest... And is it permitted for you to go about the village armed with a cudgel?"

"Right..." Cadfael didn't seemed convinced but took the bat from Conner anyway. "Connor, did you go to see a priest about that confession?"

"Uhm, not yet. I haven't gotten a chance to go out of town yet." Though the truth was that he was rather leery of confessing to anyone out of town what had happened, and now he was having second thoughts of bringing it up at all.

Connor hesitated, but finally nodded. "I promise."

Cadfael nodded.

The boy seemed like the type to keep his promises and so Cadfael would give this blessing buisness an honest effort in return.

He said a short prayer in Welsh. Asking Saint Winifred to bless this object through him since, not being a priest, he didn't think it correct to do by himself.

Then he bent his head and spoke a blessing in Latin. As he prayed, the very light and subtle sent of flowers... Or maybe it was just the cake.

Connor noticed the scent, and wondered if it was the cake, or if it meant the blessing was working.

Cadfael finished and held the bat out to Connor.

"Remember your promise young man." he said. "And... Whatever you're planning on doing with this, do be careful."
