House twiddled his thumbs at the front desk. Trauma victims were serious business. Just not challenging business. Since it was easy to diagnose.

"Brought a book," she said. "Figured I could read to you for a while." It had taken her some time to find just the right book to bring. This one was as wildly innaccurate a fictional book dealing with the supernatural that she could find. She thought it would half-amuse and half-annoy him - hopefully, in that 'so bad it's entertaining' way. She knew when she'd skimmed through it and almost heard his scoffing comments that this was the right one.

She started in on the story of a vampire/werewolf/evil-supernatural-creature hunter with a heart of gold, wading in recklessly to every situation and falling for the creatures' every wile. "Oh yes, I'm sure this is exactly the way you do it," she said, firmly tongue in cheek.
The hot sex scene that came up barely two chapters in threw her and she hesitated, blushing, not sure she wanted to read it aloud. "Uh..."

"What? It was just starting to get good,"

It was easier when she got to a more action oriented section, though the goriness made her cringe a little. And the part where the hunter - or maybe the author - seemed to totally forget that they were supposed to be inside a protective circle made her roll her eyes.
"Okay, it's bad, but hopefully it's at least a little distracting," she offered. "And it's got to be better than having me in here just all teary and moping, right?"

"Oh, no," she said at one point. "No, I don't think that's actually physically possible. Could be fun, but... no."

She sat quietly with him, letting herself think back over their time together. From that first day on the ferry till now.
"I wish there was some way you could talk to me," Lana said softly. "Or even that I could be sure you could hear me. There are so many things I'd want to say if..."
She shook her head. "No, not going there. I can't."

She shook her head ruefully. "Hell, if there were some way I could have both of you... "

"Doesn't matter anyway."
