Drake had another
handout today on creative writing.
"Today we're going to take a look at a very famous and prolific and extremely creative writer," Drake said. "Stephen King. He's a master of the horror genre and has sold an estimated 300-350 million copies of his books, including 50 novels and many more short stories and other works. Dozens of his stories have been turned into movies, and he's won numerous awards. However, if you're fan of sparkling vampires, this means absolutely nothing."
Drake rolled his eyes and went on. "Mr. King has a very simple formula for learning to write well: 'Read and write four to six hours a day. If you cannot find the time for that, you can't expect to become a good writer.' He sets out each day with a quota of 2000 words and will not stop writing until it is met. As you can see in the handout, there are several things you can learn from him. He has refused to be typecast into just horror and writes drama, fantasy, and science fiction as well. He's not afraid to experiment. He isn't bound by any type of format, such as novels, short stories, screenplays, etc. He's not afraid to leave something to the imagination of the reader and not spell it all out for them.
"So what's the lesson here? Write without fear. Don't let it get the better of you. Your assignment, on the other hand, is about fear. Write about something that scares you. Bonus points if you can scare me."
