Walk of Shame - Women of the Horror Genre

Dec 02, 2012 03:11

To follow my last first, my first multifandom video!  And for movies no less!  Though this one is definitely more my style. ;)  Crack. Galore.

Summary: A multifandom girl-power vid about the women in horror movies who refuse to be labeled by their sexuality, and refuse to passively accept their fates.  They are not virgins, they are not whores, they are women, and they're sure as hell not going quietly.

Warning: I'm not a fan of gore at all (seriously, get it away from me) but there is naturally some inescapable violence in this vid.  There are violent acts, portrayals of wounded people, a lot of fear, and a lot of people covered in blood.  Fair warning.

For those interested in the background of this video and the symbolism of the whores/virgins in horror:

This vid idea came to me while rage!painting my room and listening to this song on repeat.  Somehow I heard "please god, don't let anybody see me" and "I'm pressing all the buttons, but nothing's happening" and instead of hilarious morning after routines, my mind supplied classic horror movie scenes.  Now I'm not a horror movie buff in the least - I'd actually go so far as to say the only horror movies I truly enjoy are every single one of the Screams and The Cabin in the Woods.  Therein lies the actual motivation for this vid: there's a theory in film studies that says every classic horror movie has specific character stereotypes.  The men are characterized by their skills (or lack thereof), but the women are characterized solely by their sexuality.  There is:

- the whore, who is deemed "tainted" and deserving of punishment/death; and,

- the virgin, whose purity makes her stronger than even the men and gives her the unique potential to defeat the monster

Scream (1-4) is said to have redefined the horror movie genre by annihilating those tropes (and others) in the 90s and Cabin in the Woods is a very recent addition to this new genre of meta!horror.  The other movies I chose are Halloween H20 (the original of which was the inspiration for movies like Scream), both I Know What You Did Last Summer in keeping with the 90s theme, and House of Wax and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre which also seem to deviate (though only slightly) from tradition.
