This semester is rather frustrating. 18 hours of not much of anything really. Only two of my classes are truly engaging, which is somewhat discouraging, but I suppose it's a good thing.
Antiquity and Modernity with Jenkins. It's a fantastic class. I wrote my first paper on the reception of Catullus and how lyric poetry translates better to the stage (in this case, off-broadway) than actual dramatic performances. I listened to songs and compared them to the poems. We also just spent the last two weeks talking about the gay-gay-gay-gay-gayness of Classics. I wish I had been able to take more classes with Jenkins, he's so incredibly entertaining and somewhat of an intellectual sadist. He tortures the poor freshman in his HUMA class, but I find that incredibly entertaining.
World Literature and the Environment. The class is taught by a self-proclaimed granola Pacific-Northwestern German professor. I'm sure she's not a self-proclaimed German professor, but you get the point. The class is fantastic and I wish I had taken it much earlier had it been offered.
Elementary French. Taught by this crazy Jewish 50+ year old man from the Bronx. He's so frantic and off-topic constantly it's fantastic. I haven't learned a great deal of French, probably more if I would sit down and study more. Friday instead of doing exercises in class, we watched part of the Tony Parker 'Balance-Toi' video and then an MC Sollar video. The freshman in the class, which makes up about 90% of it, don't understand that it's okay to laugh at the absurdity of it, in fact it's encouraged.
Astronomy and Lab. They really need to either get rid of the lab requirement for non-majors or develop new lab classes that better suit humanities majors. Perhaps a Chemestry for Art/Art History majors focusing on the chemistry of restoration and/or materials, etc. Or perhaps a Linguistic Lab for any Modern Language/English majors. Or if they were feeling really ambitious, an Archaeology lab. I would have gloadly and enthusiastically taken any one of these. I'm not going to use Astronomy knowledge other than recreational-ly. sigh.
Costume Technology. Might be my favorite class because it's so fun. It's a sewing class, geared towards Drama majors, but not at all specific to. It's at 8:30 in the morning but it's nice and meditative. There's no lecturing and not too much social interaction, and for someone who isn't a particularly great morning person, this is just great for me. Our final project is to make a vest!
Radio. Starting this week I'll have a 1-hour 'show' on Thursday mornings (Wednesday nights) from 2-3AM. If you aren't up at that time/aren't within broadcasting range you can listen to it
here. Click on the 'DJ Free Indie Rock' on Thursday 2-4. I'll be the first half of the broadcast. Woot. I'm not actually in the studio at the time, shh, don't tell. But eventually I will be. Check it out. I find this absolutely hilarious for some reason. Also, I am the only non-freshman in this class.
I can't wait until december.
