Pinocchio
Once upon a time, when people’s belief in nature was still very strong, lived a very famous carpenter. Legend had it that everything he made had the power to tell the truth apart from lies. Therefore, his work was used by the council to help judges.
One day, the carpenter made a very beautiful doll from the finest wood. The doll was dressed beautifully and put at the village’s court as the symbol of light, the beacon of truth. Nobody could lie in if being confronted in front of the doll because everytime someone lied its nose got longer by an inch. Thanks to the doll, the village was able to maintain the laws and keep the citizens away from evil greeds. However, things were not going as smoothly as before for the village. After some time, a thief had been said to be lurking around and stealing many precious properties. And one night, he stole the doll away.
The village was in chaos.
They kept searching for the doll and forgot to do everything else. They believed that without the doll the balance in their lives would be gone, as justice would not be followed and laws would be ignore since nobody could tell apart what was a lie and what was not. The council sent a lot of men to find and kill the thief to bring their ultimate judge back.
That night
- You know, people needs laws to maintain things because they can not control themselves. They want more than they need.
- …
- However, even laws can be broken. Nothing is stronger than a human’s desire, that’s why they created things like you. A not-human thing. To make them feel they are obeying the rules and being good citizens. What’s different between being good and bad if you can not restrain yourself without a “symbol of justice”?
- …
- This is so ridiculous since human has long overcome the feelings of fear but still can not overcome their greeds. I brought you here to see if they can still maintain peace and order without you.
- …
- Poor things, probably you will be used until the end of humankind without people realising how helpless they are.
A few days passed and the village’s men found the thief’s hideout and hunted him down. The thief got tied to a stake and burnt down, as any thief would be punished. The village’s peace and order was regained.
However, when the thief’s body was burnt to ashes, the doll also seemed to be broken.
So did all the things the carpenter made.
