Chapter 35
Speed listened to McGee and Ziva talking about how lovely they found the day to be, and how wonderful their beverages were as they tried to fill the silence that normally would have been filled with Tony’s jokes and movie references. He couldn’t really blame them, they were still happy to be back in their normal roles. There was nothing normal about the situation in his opinion. He glared at the computer screen in front of him. Upon his reinstatement to Gibbs’ team, he’d refused to take over Tony’s desk to make a point. If Tony didn’t get to sit at the desk, it should remain empty. He was about to snap at Ziva and McGee when Gibbs strode into the squad room to inform them of a case.
“Got a call from DiNozzo.” Gibbs told them, but Speed was hardly listening. Unless he was told that they were going to see or talk to Tony, he was just going through the motions.

Abby was placing the items Tony had left behind onto his desk in an orderly fashion as the team walked in.
Gibbs paused in front of the desk. “You need something, Abs?” He asked evenly.
Abby just looked up at him. “Nope, I'm just prepping Tony's desk for his big return.” She smiled and went back to her work.
“Do you know something we don't?” Ziva inquired as she and McGee looked at Gibbs.
“I just know he's coming back.” Abby stated emphatically. “I don't know how and I don't know when, but Tony... is coming back.” She picked up Tony’s Mighty Mouse stapler and held it up at Gibbs for him to see.
“Hey, get a hold of DiNozzo.” Gibbs told McGee. “Tell him I want to see the records of the guy who jumped overboard. Pull his service file.” He edged past them and head upstairs to meet with Director Vance; Abby’s hand holding Tony’s stapler following his every move.
“Got it, boss.” McGee called after Gibbs’ retreating back. “Don't worry, Abs.” He sighed as Abby turned back to face them. “Tony's deployment will be over soon. Maybe they'll transfer him back.”
“Not maybe, McGee.” Abby pointed at him before placing the stapler on Tony’s desk. “Definitely.” McGee walked over to his desk, leaving Ziva to stare after him. Speed sighed at Abby’s determination. Abby glanced up at Speed and smiled a little.
“Thanks, Abs.” Speed whispered before heading to his own desk.

McGee sat down at his desk and unwrapped his burrito. He was about to take a bite when his computer came to life.
“Good morning, Agent Keating.” The computer trilled happily. Speed snorted and peeked over the partition between his and McGee’s desks.
McGee repeatedly tapped a key on his keyboard. “Keating.” He muttered, glaring at the screen. Gibbs’ desk phone rang, causing McGee and Speed to stare over at it.
Speed crossed to Gibbs’ desk and answered the phone before McGee could even put his burrito down. “Agent Gibbs' desk.” He answered.
“Speed?” Tony’s voice came through shocked that Speed was answering Gibbs’ phone.
“Tony. Back on dry land?
“Yeah. It's a tropical paradise, really. Just like The Blue Lagoon, except no white sand beaches, magical waterfalls, and definitely no Brooke Shields.”
“I've got some good news for you.” Speed announced.
“McGee’s coming to relieve me?” Tony asked hopefully.
Speed sighed. “No, but Vance sent-”
“Tequila?” Speed grinned at Tony’s question. “Cause I'm going to need at least a case to get through the next three months here.”
“Is that DiNozzo?” Vance asked, watching the smile drop from Speed’s face.
Speed covered the phone and mouthed “Yeah.” Vance hit the speakerphone button and Speed winced at the trouble Tony was no doubt about to get himself in.
“…everyone hates me.” Tony’s voice continued, this time out of the speaker. “You know what? You better make it two cases. With Director Vance running things, I'm going to be Agent Afloating into my sixties.” McGee and Speed looked awkwardly at Vance. “How's it going with him, anyway?”
“Oh, couldn't be better, DiNozzo.” Vance stated calmly.
“Ah, Director Vance.” Tony suddenly realized he must be on speaker and began backpedaling. “I was just, uh... just telling Speed how much I missed everyone.”
“Sit-rep.” Vance deadpanned.
“Federales turned Lieutenant Evans' body over to the Cartagena morgue. I just paid a visit to the coroner. He's insisting on doing the autopsy himself.”
Vance looked down at the phone. “We need that report.”
“Well, that's easier said than done. This guy doesn't care much for Americans. Unless it's just me.” Speed chuckled.
“We'll find out soon enough. Gibbs and Ziva flew out last night.” Vance told Tony.
“To Cartagena?”
“Yeah, Tony. That's what I was trying to tell you before.” Speed rolled his eyes.
“Well, when do they get here?” Tony asked.
“Already have.” Gibbs voice stated.
“Nice tan.” Ziva’s smiling voice followed. Speed frowned. Only he got to admire Tony’s tan in that tone of voice, but he couldn’t say so with Director Vance standing right next to him. While Jenny had known about his relationship with Tony, Speed and Tony were both more than happy to keep their love life from Vance. The line disconnected as Tony began talking to Gibbs and Ziva. Speed stared down at the phone, suddenly finding the joy of talking to Tony replaced with a deep sense of loneliness. Vance raised an eyebrow at him before turning at heading for the stairs. Speed pulled a face at his back and returned to his desk. Tony could not be home soon enough.

Tony walked into the squad room with Ziva behind him and Gibbs heading up to talk to Vance. He’d just drawn level with his desk when McGee called out to him.
“Tony!” McGee smiled.
“Hey, McGoo. Good to see you again.” Tony dropped his bag by his desk and looked around. “Where’s Speed?” He asked, expecting to at least greet his lover. The next thing Tony knew he was being tackled from behind in a fierce hug that nearly bowled him over.
“Tony!” Speed squeezed him tight, for once not caring if Director Vance was watching before pulling back and letting Tony straighten his shirt.
“Speed!” Tony grinned. “Missed you, buddy.”He pulled him into a hug and held him close for a second longer than was actually necessary. When they pulled apart, Speed had to resist the urge to kiss Tony senseless in the middle of work. Fortunately, McGee came to the rescue by asking Tony about his time on the Seahawk. Tony rolled his eyes, but grinned and launched into a long, involved story about some of the hijinks he encountered. The team gathered around as Tony sat on the edge of McGee’s desk and wove the tale. “…so this nut job is running through the mess hall, and he's completely naked, which is weird.” He looked up when Gibbs came down the stairs and turned the corner. “Hey, boss. Talk to Vance?”
Gibbs walked past them to his desk. “Yeah. Yeah. He was…”
“Tony!” Abby’s joyous cry rang through the space as she ran and launched herself at Tony. “You're back!” She threw her arms around his neck.
Tony grinned. “In the flesh.”
“For reals?” She pulled back a little. “Like, total reals? Like... ‘pinky promise’ permanent reals?” She held her pinky up in front of Tony.
Tony hooked his pinky around Abby’s. “Reassigned to D.C. effective immediately.” He smiled.
“Ah! Woo!” Abby spun around and hugged him again.
“Director just told me.” Tony smiled. Gibbs looked up at the top of the stairs where a smug Vance smirked and walked back to his office.
“Never thought I'd say this, Tony, but it is nice to have you back.” McGee admitted.
“Nice?” Abby admonished. “It's, like, spectacular. I kept every one of your postcards, and I have a whole DiNozzo wall in my lab.”
“It was a long four months.” Tony looked at his teammates as Speed sat next to him on the edge on McGee’s desk. “I've got to say it's great to be home. Not that I didn't think I wouldn't be coming back because...” He paused and Abby took advantage and started talking animatedly.
“So, anyway, Sister Rosita, she bowled a 260 last month. And I watched Titanic finally. It sinks at the end. Very weird.” Abby babbled, hardly paying attention when Gibbs reached out and shook Tony’s hand as a ‘welcome back’. Speed glanced up to be sure Vance wasn’t watching before bracing his hand on McGee’s desk so his arm rested against Tony’s back. Tony flicked his gaze to Speed with a smile. “Oh! And I got your desk all ready for you!” Abby pointed to Tony’s desk, where all of his stuff sat right where it had been before he’d been reassigned.
Tony kissed her cheek. “Thanks, Abs.” He smiled.
“And I made sure no one else got to sit there when the team started coming back together.” Speed bumped his shoulder against Tony’s. “Couldn’t let Vance replace you.” Tony smiled fondly at his friends.

Speed let out a sigh as he and Tony snuggled close, watching a movie. “It’s so good to have you back.”
“It’s good to be back.” He looked into Speed’s eyes for a moment. “It’s good to be home. Sleep in an actual bed. Not have to shower with anyone else unless I want to.” He shivered as he remembered the communal showers. “Oh, God. I can sleep naked.”
Speed groaned a little. “Tease.” He mumbled.
Tony laid his head on Speed’s shoulder. “I missed you so much, Babe. Missed your smile. Missed your voice.” He took a deep breath, inhaling Speed’s scent. “Missed your smell.” Speed played with Tony’s hair. Tony closed his eyes and purred. “Mmm… missed that too.”
Speed looked down at Tony. “You look tired, Babe.” He rumpled Tony’s hair. “Go get some sleep.”
Tony shook his head. “Comfy.” He mumbled.
Speed smiled. “Okay.” He stroked Tony hair and listened as Tony’s breathing evened out. If Tony wanted to sleep on the couch like this, he wasn’t going to argue. It was enough just to have him home.
