Reposting - David Elmore Smith on TLC

Jul 12, 2009 21:36

I watched his show tonight - it's re-airing in about 20 minutes, and then a few more times this week. It's truly inspiring. I'm so glad his trainer thought more than to just see him as a lost cause. I hope David finds a nice woman who will treat him right, as he definitely deserves it. The thing I really hate about the personals, and Craiglist in particular is that so many of the ads specify "no fat chicks". Some use that specific phrase, and others are more 'delicate' about it. I realize bigger girls aren't everyone's cup of tea, but it's important to see people as people, and not fat people who have a disease you might catch or something. As many of you know, my weight is something I've struggled with for a long time, and I know I'm the only one who can do anything about it, but it shouldn't automatically label me as less of a person. Like David, I've considered the surgery route, and also like him I worry most about not making it through surgery. And there's at least one person in my life who would likely see it as "taking the easy way out". I know with enough determination and motivation I can do it, but it will take time. Thank you to my cheerleader, Mel, who always comes to my aid when I bring this stuff up. ;)

I stumbled onto his story on MySpace a while back. Though he's had some cosmetic-type surgeries, he lost the majority of his weight through diet and exercise. TLC is doing a show on him called the 650 lb virgin - a bit demeaning if you ask me, but so be it:

650-lb Virgin
Four years ago David Smith weighed 650lbs, he was eating himself to death and doctors said he wouldn't hit 30. Now having lost over 400lbs he's fit, healthy and hoping to make up for those lost years by finding himself a girlfriend for the first time!

He has a Facebook also, and is really good about responding to personal messages.
