Kurt was driving happily towards Lima, singing with the radio. He had spent an amazing night with his boyfriend. Today was his seventeenth birthday, but since Blaine couldn’t spend this night with him, they had decided to do it the last night. At this thought, the pale teen raised a hand from the wheel to touch the scarf which was around his neck. It was a beautiful pale blue scarf that Blaine had offered him for his birthday.

After some seconds, he let his new scarf for his phone. He knew that he shouldn’t do that since he was driving, but oddly, he hadn’t received any text since this morning. Usually, he always received one from Mercedes, his best friend, even if it was to say something not very important. That and he hoped to receive at least one « happy birthday » by one of his friends.

He knew that it could seem to be silly, but usually, there was always a friend who sent a text in the morning to wish you a happy birthday. But, for the moment, nothing. It was as if everybody had forgotten.

‘Don’t be stupid,’ he thought. ’It’s Saturday so they’re probably sleeping.’

But, even with this thought, he couldn’t keep himself from having this feeling.

Eventually, he was in Lima and drove at his home. He was surprised to see a lot of cars before his house but ignored this fact. He parked and got out of his car. He took his bag then walked towards the door. He opened it and got in. Immediately, music assaulted his ears. Then he heard laughter coming from the living-room. Many and familiar laughter. So he went to see what was happening.

The living-room was full of teenagers. Teenagers which all of them were in New Directions. They were sat everywhere : on the couch, on the armchairs, on the floor. Many snacks, sodas, candies and more were on the coffee table. But what Kurt noticed was the banner which was on the wall which was opposite at the entrance of the room. The banner which said « Happy Birthday, Finn. »

He felt his heart tighten. A party had been organized for Finn’s birthday. Finn who had the same birthday than him. He could see that everybody had fun, playing games, singing, dancing. But he also could see that nobody had noticed that he wasn’t with them. Apparently, his feeling was justified. They had really forgotten his birthday.

« Kurt, I see you’re back. » The pale boy jumped at the voice and turned around to see his dad who came from the kitchen.

« Hi dad, » Kurt said, stopping his voice from shaking. « Yes, I’m back. »

« Good. Now, you can join the party. Your friends had decided to surprise Finn with this party. » Kurt felt tears come in his eyes. Even his own father had forgotten his birthday.

« Y-Yeah. I’m just going to put my bag in my room. » Then Kurt turned and headed for the stairs. Quickly, he went to his room then closed the door and sniffed. He tried to keep his tears from falling but one managed to roll on his cheek. Nobody except his boyfriend had remembered his birthday, not even his dad. Apparently, he wasn’t so important for his friends.

Sniffing again, he put his bag on his bed and started to take out his clothes from the bag. The last clothe was a brown hoddie. It wasn’t his hoddie but Blaine’s one. Without thinking, he brought it at his face and breathed the familiar scent. After what he just discovered, he needed comfort. He knew that he will need that, especially when he will be with his friends. Some seconds later, he took off his shirt and his scarf (he didn’t want it to get a stain during the party) to put the hoddie on him. Then he went in front of his mirror and tried to breath correctly in order to not to show he was about to cry. He dried his face from any trace of his tears. When he thought he was okay, he breathed, then left his room.

When he came at the living-room and announced his presence, his friends greeted him but still seemed to forget about his birthday. That made him sad but he didn’t show it. Instead of that, he went to see Finn to wish him a happy birthday. Even if his friends had forgotten about him, he just couldn’t do the same with his stepbrother.

Therefore, while the party, though he was sad and in a bad mood, he tried to show he was okay because it was Finn‘s party and his stepbrother seemed to be very happy. Apparently, it worked because nobody asked questions. He tried to have fun with his friends but he didn’t manage to. When people talked to him or asked him to join them in their fun, he smiled. However, deep down, he just felt sadder. His friends hadn’t only forgotten his birthday, but they also didn’t notice that he wasn’t in a good mood as well. Not even his best friend who tended to know this kind of things. This fact just made him feel less important.

Suddenly, he got out off his thoughts when he heard Mercedes’ voice.

« Kurt, do you want to sing with me ? » His best friend asked. Kurt put his best fake smile and nodded.

« Of course. » He raised from his place and followed Mercedes. When they searched a song to perform, the girl suggested that they chose a song for Finn. Kurt just agreed and let his best friend choose the song. They sang it in front of all the glee club, and at the end, everybody applauded while Finn hugged them to thank them.

Some times later, when everybody had finished singing for Finn, they gathered in a circle to play some games. Through them, Kurt noticed that everybody had fun. Everybody except him. In spite of all his efforts, he just couldn’t ignore the fact that for his friends, he wasn’t very important.

Several times, he just wanted to go to his room, using a call from his boyfriend as an excuse, but everytime that happened, he thought about Finn’s party and what others could think, and he stopped himself from doing that, swallowing his tears.

Eventually came the time for the presents. Kurt left to take his present for Finn which was hidden in his room. Even if the others had forgotten about his own birthday, he hadn’t forgotten Finn’s one.

When he came back with the present in his hands, Finn could start to open his presents. He received many gifts like video games, CDs, or tickets for a football match. The tall teen was very happy and thanked everybody. All his friends laughed even Kurt, though his laughter was a little forced.

While they were waiting for the cake, Finn and the other boys decided to play at one of his new video games whereas girls watched them and talked.

The cake came about ten minutes later. Everybody went to settle around the table. When Carole put the cake on the table, some started to take pictures while the glee club sang « Happy Birthday ». Then everybody applauded and cheered when Finn blew out the candles, making him smile more. However, their acclamations were cut by a gasp. Everybody turned towards Brittany (who was responsible of this gasp) who started to panic.

« Oh my god, I’m so sorry. »

« What’s wrong, Britt ? » Artie asked while everybody looked at her inquiringly. However she didn’t answer. Instead of that, she ran towards her bag which was with other ones and started to search something while she didn’t stop murmuring ‘sorry‘.

When she found what she was searching, she came before Kurt and held out her arms. Everybody could see she was holding a little box. « Happy Birthday, Kurtie ! » she exclaimed, smiling.

Suddenly, every noise and sound stopped. Everybody had his eyes open wide, even Kurt who just looked at the box, as if he didn’t believe what was happening. And it was the case. The young diva didn’t manage to believe that somebody had remembered. Tears started to come in his eyes again.

Brittany stopped to smile when she realized that Kurt didn’t react, that he just looked at the box with tear filled eyes. She started to worry, believing that the boy was mad to her. « I’m sorry for forgetting your birthday, Kurtie. When I came here, I wanted to wish you a happy birthday and to give you your present, but you wasn’t here. So I forgot. You’re not mad, are you ? »

Once again, Kurt didn’t answer. He couldn’t do that because he was so overjoyed that one of his friends had remembered. But in the same time, he was hurt that only one of them had remembered. Suddenly, he couldn’t stop himself from bursting into tears, and he ran to his room.

For a moment, a big silence settled, where everybody except Brittany realized what just happened. They had forgotten Kurt’s birthday. They had forgotten his birthday while they had remembered very well Finn’s one. Guilty started to settle among the group.

Finally Brittany, who stayed with her arms extending, reacted and started to run to Kurt’s room. She didn’t understand why Kurt had suddenly burst into tears but that worried her. Especially because she thought it was because of her.

When she got in the room, she saw that his friend was on his bed and was crying in his pillow. She closed the door and went to settle beside Kurt. She put one of her hands on Kurt’s back and looked at him.

« Kurtie, what’s wrong ? Why are you crying ? »

« N-Nothing, » Kurt’s muffled and shaking voice said. But Brittany didn’t believe him.

« It’s not nothing, Kurtie. I don’t like seeing my dolphin crying. Please, tell me what’s wrong. Is it because of my present ? Did my present upset you ? » Kurt shook his head and kept crying. Brittany rubbed his back with her hand while her other hand was in Kurt’s hair, caressing them. She also murmured comfort words in hope of helping the pale teen.

Eventually, Kurt’s sobs stopped and he turned his head to look at the fair girl. The latter felt his heart tighten when she saw his red eyes and the sadness that there was in them.

« Kurtie, are you okay ? My mom always says that crying makes you feel good after. » Kurt shrugged. He didn’t have the force to lie. No, he wasn’t okay, but he will be eventually. Brittany watched his friend then noticed that Kurt was wearing a hoddie that she had never seen. « Kurt, is it a new hoddie ? »

The boy looked at the clothe and smiled a little. « No, It’s not a new hoddie. It’s Blaine’s one. »

« Oh ! Are you sad because he’s not here with you ? Is that why you cried ? »

« No. No it’s not that why I cried. » Brittany frowned.

« So why ? » For a moment, Kurt stayed silent. Then he sighed and decided to tell his friend the reason.

« Nobody except Blaine and you had remembered about my birthday. Not even my own father or my best friend. » Brittany opened her eyes wide, her mouth forming a surprised ’oh’. « The worse is they had remembered about Finn’s one, » Kurt continued. « Why had they remembered about his one but not mine ? Am I so insignificant to them ? » Brittany started to shake her head.

« No, Kurtie, don’t say that. You’re important, very very important. I’m sure they didn’t intend to forget. » Kurt felt tears roll on his cheeks and sniffed.

« Yes, but it still hurts, Britt. » Seeing and hearing her friend’s pain, Brittany put her arms around the slender body and brought him against her chest. She rubbed his back in order to comfort him and whispered sweet words in his ear.

Eventually, Kurt’s tears stopped and the young diva tried to breath regularly. When he was calm enough, Brittany moved closer in order to look at him.

« Do you want your present ? » Kurt smiled a little and rubbed his eyes with his hands.

« I’d love to. » Brittany smiled and took her present and offered it at Kurt. « I hope you’ll like it. » Kurt took the present and delicately removed the wrapping paper while the blond girl watched him, smiling. He took off the box lid then the object. He removed the paper which protected it. His eyes opened wide when he saw what the object was. It was a little dolphin shaped glass ornament with blue painted eyes. Kurt looked at Brittany and smiled.

« I love it. Thanks, Britt. » The girl beamed, happy to make Kurt smile and that her present pleased Kurt.

« You’re welcome, Kurtie. When I saw the dolphin, I immediately thought about you. » Once again, Kurt smiled. Then he moved and hugged Brittany, murmuring a ’thanks’ in her ear.

Meanwhile, all the Glee Club and the Hudmels were in the living-room, drowning in their guilt. They didn’t manage to believe that they had forgotten about Kurt’s birthday. How could they do that ? Though they knew that Finn and Kurt had the same birthday (after all, when they had learnt about that, they had laughed and joked about that), they just remembered one.

They felt very bad. They knew that they hurt Kurt. After all, the latter ran away earlier, bursting into tears. Something which was rare with this boy. How couldn’t they see that their young friend was hurt and upset while the whole party ?

But the people who felt the most bad were the Hudmels and Mercedes. Kurt was their family for the Hudmels and their best friend for Mercedes. How could they forget an important moment about him ? Among all the people who were present, only Brittany had remembered about Kurt’s birthday. The blond ex-cheerleader had remembered whereas his own family and best friend had forgotten.

Eventually, someone asked what they could do in order to fix this situation. Everybody looked at Quinn, who was the one that asked that. However, nobody had the answer. They knew that no matter what they could do, Kurt won’t forget about that and won’t forgive them easily. And, even if he accepted their apologizes, they knew he’ll remain upset about that.

« We should let Brittany talk with Kurt, » Santana said. The group agreed then decided to wait, the room full of guilty, sadness and anxiety. They didn’t talk, they were just lost in their thoughts and remorse.

Then thirty minutes later, they heard steps in the stairs. Everyone turned their head towards the entrance, ready to apologize. Finally Kurt and Brittany appeared, holding each other’s hand. Many hearts tightened when they saw the countertenor’s face. All of them started to speak at the same moment, making their apologizes incomprehensible.

Kurt eventually raised his hand to stop them. When they were silent, he started to speak, his voice quiet and sad.

« I know you want to apologize but it doesn’t matter. What happened can’t be changed and… your apologizes won’t erase the feelings. » Kurt sighed. « Listen, for the moment, I just want to forget what happened, okay ? » Then, Kurt turned back and left the room. The Glee Club watched him leave, shoulders and head lowered, guiltily and sadly. They had screwed up.
