Smooth as butter... and twice as guilty

Thursday, I broke a spoke. Two, actually. I literally limped the last mile to the bike shop as the back tire was wobbling uncontrollably. Since I was already there, I asked they schedule in a tuneup and I walked home.

Today, I took the bus and walked to pick up the bike. All I can say is, "Wow!" I've not ridden a professionally tuned bike in years... I've been doing it myself the past few. AHHHmazing! The gears flowed like butter, the brakes were tight and effective, there was no clacking in the pedal shaft... Wow!

If I didn't have so much to do tonight, I'd be off on a ride right now to drink in the amazing smoothness of the finely tuned piece of machinery that is my bike!

Now, the guilt. When I left the house this morning, I took my bike lock and the cd I had to return to the library, but alas, I forgot to grab my helmet and rear-view mirror. It was only about 20 blocks home, yet I felt naked and ashamed of my helmetless head and limited vision. What does that say about me that I felt my face redden as I passed people?

Part of it is my 3 years working for physical therapists, I'm sure. The people we saw in the office were the ones who wore their helmets. The bikers who didn't, well... they often didn't leave the hospital.

Any other parts I can just chalk up to being a freak, I'm sure. Still, I'm a happy freak with a finely tuned bike, and that says a lot!
