I watched it all last night and it is definitely the weakest season that they have done. For a show about Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, it has shockingly little wrestling in it this season. I know that in previous seasons the wrestling was just a backdrop for the dramatic and the comedic elements of the show but it's really non-existsnt here. If I remember correctly, only 2 episodes had any bit of wrestling in it.
First half of the season is better than the second with the best episode being "Freaky Tuesday" where they switch up the roles that they all play and it ends it with what was suppose to be a tense mid season cliff hanger but the next episode is just "Lets go camping".
Some of the supporting cast like Jenny and Melrose get some backstory but the problem for me with this is that I just don't care. These backstories should have happened in Season 1 or 2 not after 3 years of the show starting. I feel also that they didn't integrate Vegas enough into the season. The showrunner and cast built up the hype about the backdrop of Vegas but it was such a let down. It just felt very insular, claustrophobic and generic.
Some more Observations and I guess spoilers for the rest of Season and Show below
-The Good about this season - Ruth and Debbie's Friendship. It was nice to finally see their friendship out in full force this season - Debbie who I hated in the other seasons but I enjoyed this season - Tammé and how she was struggling through the shows with her injuries. She is the best of the supporting cast - Sheila and her transformation was refreshing to see and really brought out a nice direction for her - Keith and Cherry - their arc about having a baby
-The Bad - Bash was/is a man-child but at least he was a nice character but he is insufferable this season - Arthie and Yolonda's relationship difficulties I don't care about, it felt very shallow and surface level - Sam and thus Marc Maron were wasted this season with a poor storyline - A lot of storylines were started and abandoned like Debbie and her Bulimia - Dawn, Stacey and I guess Reggie (who the writers can't give a storyline to) are still a waste of story time in this show that should and can be given to other characters - What's with the showrunners and writers having women and far older men dating/having feelings etc, they done it with Ruth and Sam and now with Debbie and Tex - and Finally Fuck this Sam/Ruth Storyline seriously. I was happy with what they did at the start of Season 3 but then near the end bring it right back up. They just need to dump this storyline into the ocean and never bring it back up
- Random Observations - This is the dreaded 3rd season of a Netflix show, will Glow be cancelled like a lot of other shows? I have a feeling that Season 3 will be its last especially after the story that it was nearly cancelled after Season 1 for low viewership. What might have saved 'Glow' after Season 2 was that it got 10 Emmy nominations including best Comedy but this year it was frozen out of Best Comedy, went from 10 to 5 nominations with the only big nomination being Betty in Supporting Actress. - Also what is not going to help is that it dropped between the New Seasons of more popular Netflix shows of 'Orange is the New Black' and 'Mindhunter'. If people have a backlog of shows that they are going through at the moment, I can see them skipping 'Glow'. And I think this ties into that there didn't seem to be much promotion of Season 3 this year. Alison I think was on 1 Talk show (Jimmy Kimmel I think) for promoting it and as above Betty was on James Corden with Joel. - Ranking the Seasons so far - Season 1 >> Season 2 >>>>> Season 3. Season 3 just was a jumbled mess to me.
Also just in case people don't know, Joel will be starring as Starman in 'Stargirl' TV show that is scheduled to air early 2020.
Hahahahaha. What is it with Alison getting cast as a love interest for grumpy older guys? Even though Ruth is a million miles away from Annie, here she is in the same-ish romantic tangle.
I haven't watched Glow yet, but I'm not spoiler-phobic. I actually don't mind Sam/Ruth. I think it'll be a trainwreck of massive proportions in the end, but I don't mind it.
