On S4:
Oh, so that's why it's such a mess continuity wise. Thanks for the info! I always wondered about that...

On Football:
I thought it was moved up the schedule because they figured out during editing that they needed to shoot an additional scene, namely the milady/milord exchange at the end. I remember hearing that on the commentary...

Also, didn't Dan & co only realize after this episode aired that J/A were a potential gold mine? I wasn't there from the start but I thought the online reaction after Football (and subsequently the J/A dance in Statistics) convinced Dan to explore the pairing, leading to the Debate episode... Has he stated otherwise somewhere? I live for details like this! Give me more! ;-)

On animated episodes:
Yes, production codes mean nothing for these episodes. Following the order of airing is key there. The biggest exception being Digital Estate Planning because of the end tag and how it disrupts the flow of the Chang/Dean storyline. I'd actually put it before Basic Lupine Urology, because that ends with Starburns dying, leading into Course Listing Unavailable.

On puppets:
Intro To Felt Surrogacy? What's that? I've never heard of this episode. And I'll certainly never watch it again! Wait, what?

In conclusion:
I've you've never done it before, give the "Football, Criminal Law then Social Psychology" viewing order a try. It has the same effect as the "Accounting - Psychology of Letting Go" switch. Everything just flows so much better. (And I like getting a big J/A moment so soon in the season, makes all the J/B-ness easier to stomach...)

I wasn't here for the beginning of fandom, but based on what I remember from the S1 DVD commentaries, Dan and the Russo Brothers actually noticed the chemistry in episode two before the audience did. It's literally when Jeff walks into the room, kisses Annie's hand, and calls her "milady."

That's it. That 5-second scene. That's what got their attention.

A lot of the audience didn't even get onboard until "Football" or "Debate."

The other J/A scene Dan really likes according to the S1 DVDs? It's the scene at the end of "Intro to Statistics" where Jeff silently asks Annie to dance, because according to him, that's when he realized that he might be able to do something with it. (That might also be the commentary where Dan admits that if he had to do it all over again, he would've made Annie at last 20-21 because...well...Alison Brie.)

I remember the commentary differently. I seem to recall Dan saying that it was moved specifically because they wanted it to air closer to Debate so Jeff's actions in the Debate episode (his over-protectiveness most likely, as opposed to the kiss) wouldn't seem to come from out of nowhere.

I seem to recall also that they did the Milady/Milord scene as a pick-up (also, Dan notes that the sleeves of Joel's sweater are rolled up in the far away shots, and rolled down in the close-ups), but it wasn't responsible for the episode order being changed.

I always thought that first milady/milord (as well as the 'Annie is awesome' scene from the Pilot) where moments that were recognized in hindsight... I'm so confused now!

So I guess one of us will have to rewatch/listen to the commentaries to find out who out-geeked who? ;-)

If we're thinking of the same commentary, I think after Dan says he saw their chemistry in episode 2, he quickly adds something like, "even in the pilot, you (Alison, who was also on this commentary) gave him a look."
