Erm, yeah, I was pretty harsh on it, wasn't I? I can't help it, though. I work in a helping profession so I tend to work with people who have experienced trauma (whether violence, or substance use, or whatever) and my educational background involved a lot of social and academic discourse on racism, sexism, etc. I don't think I've ever willingly rewatched Competitive Wine Tasting and in paying attention to it in order to write down my thoughts/analysis on it, I ended up realising how much I actively dislike it. And it's definitely a consequence of my education and work because the first time I saw it, I didn't like it, but I didn't hate it either.

What exactly was Jeff implying by saying that "Irony-Free Annie" is not what people call her? Most interpretations seem to think it's something sexual, but I never really got that sense. The only conclusion I've drawn from it is that Annie just doesn't know what people are saying about her.

I never got the sense that it was something sexual either. I always assumed it was something insulting, that they called her Crazy Annie or Intense Annie or something more insulting but also referring to either her past or her rather involved and adamantly studious school persona. It's possible it was something sexual but it always seemed like Jeff was trying to imply they called her something negative and I can't see him using a sexual nickname to embarrass her, if that makes sense?

A pretty logical speculation would be something like "Uptight Annie" or "High Strung Annie"
