Non Consentual Russian Roulette

So it's been a revolving door of soreness, illness and injury, with very little in fact acquired by fighting, but all the same it is AFFECTING my fighting.

For the past month I've been dicking about with Tennis Elbow in my right elbow(sword arm) and it's not seeming to get any better. Lastnight I only made it through two fights, one with Wernar ( Read more... )

Injuries affect EVERYTHING about my fighting. When I'm not up to par the fight doesen't go as well, my brain get ahold of it and voila! Spiral of personal disgust.

The first thing you need to do, you are doing. Take the time off. Here for two reasons. 1. Don't be the stupid fighter that fights through the pain. That fighter shorten their fighting career any leaps and bound for EVEY fight they do injured. Tennis elbow can take months to heal, but if you don't let it, you'll a) re-injure and b) stifle your own progress. I've two fighters out right now for it... and I'll be damn if I let them back in until they can prove they are good to go. (okay I can't but I can disapprove a lot and make sure their knight smacks 'em for it) The second reason is headspace. This seems to be more an issue with females than males or we're more aware of it. You've read my own monologues on the subject. I get it. The best thing for me is to watch, ask questions, do the slow work (as body permits) and sometimes just don't go. This is the nich yoga fills for me. I do yoga to center body and mind; physically I feel much better and have centered on something intently that a)isn't fighting and therefore b) does not allow the spiral to happen.

First thing first, let your body heal. Nothing else will come if you don't. Take the praise for what it is. Honest. These guys don't praise easily or often or without some truth. It took me a long time to learn to take what was given in the spirit it was given. But don't let your head get big. Keep that balance and you'll do good mentally.

The only other unwanted advice I can offer sounds trite but is true (I've been there, I know the feeling. I still slide into it sometimes). It's this, listen to your body... and it will come.

"Spiral of personal disgust" Yep that says it all. Man I appreciate your input here. It's been frustrating, to say the least, and I don't really have many female fighter friends here to *commiserate* with on a regular or close basis. Lisa is the closest thing and is an emergency nurse so has advice, but we don't hang regularly. S is good tho, he almost always errs on the side of caution and tells me not to fight if I'm not fit for it. Sometimes I wished I had a BATH of the Chinese Medicine though, would be much easier to do it myself than nag S..but even then sometimes the reach just isn't there. *sigh*

I'm not going to name names, but it's not an easy thing to refuse to fight when someone goads you to, "take some advil, suit up and come beat us up". BUT it's not an order, or even meant in a malicious, *you are weak otherwise* manner.

I know how to say "No" to others with valid explanation why not. It's more difficult to say no to yourself when WANT to fight and you think MAYBE you can tough it out. Prolly good S was there lastnight( he usually isn't)to encourage me to quit at the point I did.

I have been doing some research on tennis elbow and have been doing the stretching, icing, pressure point, muscle building exercises that are medically recommended. BUT I found this site ---> http://www.kingbrand.com/Tennis-Elbow.php?REF=TEBrace and am now debating asking others with tennis elbow injuries to go in on the product(s) with me. Hmmm...maybe the barony can purchase it as part of a first aid-ish kit for the fighters? Either way, I'd like one. I also plan to purchase a brace to help imobilize the elbow so it won't get over extended and "bent out of shape" while recovering.

The "occupy basement" project is coming along. By this weekend I'll have a work room set up down there and my workout room will also start seeing more action(as all the zombies will be purged by then ;)) Yoga and Taichi and maybe some Industrial inspired 'dancin with myself' will hopefully improve my fitness aspirations.

Anyways, I booked a physio appt for next week(my medical insurance pays for it ALL).

Thanks for the feedback :)

Tennis elbow is a more personal things. Og has it and it took him out for months. He was doing physio for it. His men-at-arms is also out for the count with it. Og stops when it gets too bad but some advil is alight.

And about the goading. One thing the assholes DON'T get is the body shape difference. Your body is dealing with different stresses than theirs. Period. Listen yours not their ignorant goading. Some advil is alright, but ongoing is bad for the body and you shouldn't be relying on it.

erm, maybe I won't buy into this device without a bit more research on effectiveness. S says it's "quack medicine".
