Summary: Taemin told Minho he looked like a giraffe on the first night they met.
The first time they ever met, the painfully taciturn Taemin surprised and amused both sets of parents and their kindergarten teacher by excitedly comparing Minho to a giraffe, wide eyes sparkling.
Minho was taken-aback at first, equal parts reserved and insecure about his abnormal height, but his expression melted into an indulgent smile when he saw the mirth on the small boy's pretty face.
Uncharacteristic of his usual reticent self, Minho knelt down to offer the boy to ride on his shoulders and look at the playground from a brand new light.
The adults were all wary and that was just as well, considering a skinny little boy suddenly had the life of an even tinier one on his shoulders. Literally.
Things went much better than any of them expected, from Taemin socializing normally with a boy his age to Minho smiling from (awkwardly large and monkey-like) ear to ear as his hands curled around the smaller boy's bony thighs.
Hands resting on top of Minho's bowl-cut hair for balance, Taemin exclaimed that he could see the whole world from there.
Taemin was downhearted a lot these days. The cards weren't flipping in his favor, and as badly as Minho wanted to help him, to fix everything, nothing he could do would change that rejection letter from the arts school into an acceptance, could re-do his senior project so he aced it instead of scraped by, could stop his ex-boyfriend from cheating on him with his best friend.
The best he could do was sit and watch Taemin's morale crumble with each passing day. The only role he could fulfill was the person to quietly open his arms for the younger to melt into anytime he needed, anytime he ever wanted.
"Do you remember when we met?" Taemin mused gently from the rooftop of Jinki's parents' coffee shop where they went when things got too hectic, voice barely a whisper that drifted from his side of the roof to Minho's only as fast as the wind could carry it, "And I called you a giraffe?"
Minho chuckled just as softly, nodding.
"You let me ride on your shoulders," A smile laced his tone, just a small one that only hinted at the one Minho so missed seeing across his lips.
Minho nodded once again at the fond memory. "You were still small back then."
"You should let me again." Taemin said abruptly, rounding on Minho with mischief in the eyes that were still as bright as the day they met.
Minho wanted to say something in the negative, that they were too old or something of the like, but he didn't. He didn't, because he wanted to do nothing but anything to make him happy again.
So, he stooped down and let the younger sit on his shoulders; he stood and held tight to Taemin's legs so didn't fall back while Taemin's hands clasped under his chin. He didn't feel any heavier to Minho than he did when they were kids.
Taemin laughed on the way up, full and unrestrained, and Minho's heart gave a tight squeeze at the sound, lips pulling into a smile. He missed that so much.
"The city looks bigger from here," He said with a grin in his voice, "You're so tall, hyung. Like a giraffe."
Minho didn't have the grace to feel offended. He was too enthralled by Taemin's childlike excitement.
"Hey hyung?" Taemin whispered once his laughter died into the night.
"Yeah?"
"Thank you for always being here,"
His chest constricted. "No problem," He said in place of nodding and throwing them both off balance.
"When you leave for university," He paused and unknowingly gave Minho time to swallow the lump in his throat at the thought of going away to the big city, "Can I go with you?"
Minho's heart swelled, and there was a persistent nagging at the back of his head that outlined every reason why that was a bad idea, but it was drowned out by the sound of blood rushing in his ears. "Sure,"
"Hyung, let me down," Taemin said softly, and Minho's stomach dropped in fear that he said the wrong thing.
He dipped down and let Taemin slide awkwardly off his shoulders.
By the time Minho was straightening back up, Taemin had his arms twined around Minho's neck.
Minho was stock-still, and it was two seconds after Taemin pulled away that Minho realized Taemin kissed him.
Heart racing, Minho prayed that he hadn't missed his only chance and bent down to touch their lips together.
The way that Taemin melted into the touch when Minho's hands landed on his waist told him that he hadn't missed his chance. Not at all.
Years of waiting for Taemin brought Minho to this and it was worth every moment. He felt so nervous, his whole body tense and unsure, but that was okay, because Taemin just smiled against his mouth and tilted his head up and erased every anxiety-driven thought from his mind.
This was everything Minho ever wanted in a first kiss, from Taemin's breath on his upper lip and the awkward tilt of their heads to the stars watching the moment.
It didn't last any more than five seconds before Taemin pulled away, but it felt like hours to Minho. Blissful, stricken hours.
Taemin's grin was back. The full, wide, toothy smile that infected Minho and made his heart jump.
Minho smiled gently.
He could see his whole world from here.
A/N - this is what happens when I get a random wave of 2min feels at school one day and have the leisure time to write. idk man. idk.
trying to rebuild my vocabulary took me three times to type that word LOL WHY because of reasons. this is pretty much my lame attempt at actually trying to write well instead of just write for fun. I'll stick to my normal way from now on. XP
in other news, "taciturn" is an awesome word and every other synonym for "shy" can go home.
and yeah. this is dumb and shot but you know what that's okay. I'll post that Jongkey thing (which is a complete monster, almost 7,000 words OTL) on Friday ^^
thanks for reading c:
