Summary: This was the most important day of the year and all. It had to be worth it today.
Jonghyun crouched down just behind the bushes of the studio, though the movement was nullified by the fact that he craned his neck above the plants to see if Key was coming yet.
He frowned. There was no sign of the younger man, who should have finished up his dance class-if Jonghyun's watch wasn't lying to him-fourteen minutes before. It was bad enough that Key insisted that he still had to go to class on this day, arguably the most important day of the entire year, save for their birthdays, but it was just so like Key to keep him waiting.
... Not that Key knew that Jonghyun was waiting outside. That much, along with the cramps in Jonghyun's arms from holding his hands behind his back for a good eighteen minutes now, was a well-crafted, brilliantly planned surprise for him.
Because this was the most important day of the year and all. It had to be worth it today.
His eyes grew three sizes when he saw the younger's figure from inside the window of the building. Jonghyun ducked back into place and squeezed his hands more tightly, listening for Key's footsteps to come closer.
He grinned as they drew near enough for him to announce himself.
"Key!" He jumped from behind the bush, carefully hiding his gift behind his back.
Key cursed and stepped back, bracing a hand over his chest. "Jonghyun, don't do that!"
Jonghyun smiled good-naturedly and shifted his weight from one foot to the other, taking in the younger's appearance, all flushed and with long bangs pinned back from his face. He was adorable, as always. And beautiful. All at the same time. He was kind of unreal like that.
Jonghyun was the luckiest guy on the planet to be able to call him his own.
"Why are you just standing there? What are you holding?" Key demanded in quick succession, distrust clear in his eyes.
Jonghyun smiled again; he felt his eyes squint into little crescents and Key's did the same, though in suspicion rather than due to a happy expression.
Key crossed his arms impatiently when Jonghyun didn't answer.
"I got you something." Jonghyun sang, rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet.
"I swear to god, if it's something stupid-"
Key was cut off as Jonghyun brought his hand in front of him, revealing the bouquet of roses that he'd prepared as a gift for the occasion-and they were fucking expensive, too.
The younger's eyes widened and he looked from the flowers to Jonghyun's sheepish smile and back again. He stood stock-still, lips slightly parted in surprise.
"Happy Valentine's Day," Jonghyun said, arms outstretched in front of him, gripping the bunched-up stems of the dozen roses.
Key blinked once, twice, and then brushed right past Jonghyun without saying a word.
The older grinned and turned to him, watching his back retreating down the sidewalk. So he likes them.
He rushed to catch up with Key, looping his free arm unashamedly around his waist and pressing his lips to his cheekbone, noticing that his skin was burning underneath the touch.
"I don't want them." Key said dryly, arms still crossed over his chest. He didn't look over at Jonghyun, thus missing the wide grin that spread over his lips.
"They're pretty, right?" Jonghyun asked proudly, holding up the roses between them.
Key looked pointedly away. "No. Who asked you to buy me flowers anyway?"
"Key," Jonghyun said, pouting, "It's Valentine's Day."
The younger scoffed. "And?"
"And these roses are for you." He stopped walking and held Key's wrist to make him do the same, both standing in the middle of the empty sidewalk.
"I don't want them." Key repeated stubbornly.
"Are you sure?" Jonghyun didn't bother to be upset by it. He knew that the younger, brazen as he may act, was only being obstinate because he was embarrassed. Key would never-never never never-say it, but he loved when Jonghyun did things like this.
"Yes. Go return them."
Jonghyun smiled and laced their fingers together between them.
Key made to tug his hand away, but Jonghyun held tighter.
"Key?"
He grimaced. "What?"
Jonghyun reached across them and trailed a finger down Key's temple to turn his chin to face him. Without giving him time to protest, Jonghyun leaned in and pressed his lips gently to his.
Key's breath caught audibly, and he made to push him away by the shoulder… His attempt failed when he sighed slightly-was it in defeat or happiness? Jonghyun wondered-and relaxed his hand right at the side of his neck.
Jonghyun smiled against his mouth, and couldn't hide it even when he pulled back. "You really don't want them?"
The younger's cheeks turned a pretty shade of crimson and he frowned.
Without a word, he snatched the flowers out of Jonghyun's hands and turned to continue walking.
Feeling accomplished beyond belief, Jonghyun went to catch up with him again.
Just two steps behind, the older could have sworn that Key grumbled something about the flowers being "maybe a little pretty".
