A Starlandballroom.com Interview:
Ringing In 2008 with Geoff Rickly and Thursday
In a one-on-one Starlandballroom.com interview, Thursday vocalist Geoff Rickly talks about kicking off '08 Starland-style. Plus... word on an exclusive, 21+ after-party, plans for the midnight countdown, and more.
Like New Year's Eve, Thursday has made a habit of visiting Starland once a year. And while previous December 31st shows have featured artists like Velvet Revolver, Dramarama and The Robert Randolph Band, this year's soiree takes a decidedly more local - and louder - feel.
We sat down with Thursday vocalist Geoff Rickly to talk about the show, and we found out a ton. Like the news that fans 21 years of age and older will be invited to an exclusive after-party with the band. And the fact that the guys hope '08 delivers futuristic skateboarding technology. Read on...

Starland: So, New Year’s Eve at Starland. You guys have sold the place out 6 times already. So given your status as a Jersey band playing the biggest night of the year, what are you looking forward to this time around?
Geoff Rickly I'm looking forward to the biggest party this band has ever been a part of. We're pulling out all the stops to make sure this isn't just another show. Musically, we're putting together a set with all the favorites and some stuff we NEVER play. Plus the line-up of musical guests this year is one of my favorites.
Starland: So it's set: you’re celebrating the dawn of 2008 in Sayreville. What have you done in the past to mark the new year?
Rickly: We haven't played a New Year's show since we played my basement in 1998! Last year it was a pajama party. The year before I was in Sydney. Looks like a once in a decade type thing!
Starland: Fans have asked us what the set-up will be like. Like, will you be on stage at midnight? Is there going to be confetti and balloons and noisemakers? Is this going to be a party, a concert -- or both?
Rickly: Since so many people are spending their New Year's Eve with us we've decided to make it a REAL party. Midnight celebration, noisemakers, lights, the whole enchilada. We've got some rad DJ sets from some of our favorite "Long Island Musicians" -- hint, hint.
Starland: Kill The House Lights came out on in October, and let’s face it: a lot of it comes from shows you’ve done here at Starland. Do you guys always create cinematic moments in this building? What’s special about your shows here?
Rickly: Every year we come home to the Starland Ballroom, not only because we're a Jersey band but because we always have our best shows here. It's like there's some kind of magic in the building. It feels small and intimate when you want it to and it feels like a big exciting show when you want it to.
Starland: You've just announced plans for a 21+ after-party, where you're going to deejay and the band is going to hang out and ring in 2008 with some fans. That’s so chill -- bands just don’t do that. So why are you guys?
Rickly: We like to get to know the people that are into are band. We're not the type to hide back stage and sneak out in a black limo after the show. And we like to party.
Starland: What are you looking forward to in 2008?
Rickly: Making a new record!!! Can't wait for that. Oh... and we're all hoping the flying skateboards from Back to the Future II will finally come out this year.:
