Them Crooked Vultures is a (so-far) one-off supergroup composed of Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, and of course Nirvana's drummer) and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin fame. Their cd came out in late 2009, and probably sometime in 2010 I downloaded several tracks, including "New Fang", "Mind Eraser, No Chaser", and "Elephant". I liked these tracks quite a bit, but like usual with me I grew tired of them after a few months and they moved to the bottom of my iPod playlists or got removed altogether.
In the Summer of 2011 I found the full cd in the bargain bin at the yearly Half Price Warehouse Sale, on Sunday when everything is $1.00 (or a full bag is $25.00). So I got the cd for a buck. I listened to it a few times in my car, then shoved it into the door side pocket and forgot about it. It sat there for over a year, but I recently grabbed several cds from my car that I'd never ripped (including the Evil Stig cd, and a more recently-purchased Mark Lanegan cd, Field Recordings. Also the first Death Vessel cd, Stay Close). I ripped them, and that was that.
This last weekend I set my "recently added" section of iTunes to play songs at random. I'd just purchased "Stone", the new single from the upcoming release by Alice In Chains, and had been listening to the new single from the upcoming Queens of the Stone Age cd, but especially I had just bought the full cd for Amorphis's new release Circle. It was nice to hear these songs, plus a little Evil Stig, Death Vessel, and Mark Lanegan thrown in. But iTunes kept playing songs that I recognized were Them Crooked Vultures, but that I didn't remember, and which sounded really good.
Apparently I'd never listened to the cd enough to appreciate some of the songs on it that I hadn't already downloaded. Sometimes, to appreciate a song, you have to hear a song out of context -- not as the 7th track on the cd after the first six and before the 8th, 9th, and 10th, but as a song that follows something completely different from it. In this context, I suddenly realized that Caligulove was a much better song than those I'd initially downloaded from the cd -- it's now my favorite track from the album.
Usually I go to Youtube to try and figure out what songs I want to download from a cd in order to "sample" it. The tracks I'd downloaded from this were fine tracks, but did not lead me to buy the full cd until it was only $1.00. And then it took another 1.5 years before I really gave it a chance and discovered the track I like best.
This also convinced me to go back and order Era Vulgaris for a few bucks (used) from Amazon, it's the only Queens of the Stone Age cd I didn't own and/or had never downloaded a track from. I still have to wait something like a month or so for their new cd to release (and the new AIC cd for that matter) so Era Vulgaris will hopefully tide me over until then.
But for now I have Stone and Caligulove!
