...one of my earliest memories as a child...

...i was a very impressionable kid...i was never liked, & i never really had friends, so it's easy to guess that whenever i found anyone close to my age willing to pay the least bit of attention to me, i was overjoyed, & i accepted every word they uttered as rule of law.
i'm not sure when in my life this happened, where it was, or many other details besides the apartment complex's little playground, the old couple downstairs that left me their porcelain bear statues when they died, & the dump just over the rock wall.

there was a pack of kids that ran around the complex, & i wanted desperately to be a part of their group. i remember, one day in the sand of the playground, one of the older kids declared that he had a bleeding banana. he ran off to his apartment & upon return, produced a true to life banana. he proceeded to peel the banana, then broke it in half...sure enough, the banana had a red center. in retrospect, i'm sure it was just some food coloring, cleverly injected into the poor fruit, but never-the-less, it was offered to me to take the obligatory bite. i'm pretty sure i ran crying to the dump site near the apartment complex & hid in the garbage.

...those kids never aknowledged me again, except to laugh. whenever my mother would recommend i go play, i would go back to the dump nearby & sit amongst the discarded things. broken toys & warped vinyl were my companions, & i had an entire kingdom of trash to rule over.

...not sure why i thought of this...
