i just wrote this in response to discussion about the reunion of toad the wet sprocket in december. if you know me, you know i've been a toad junkie for years. and miracle upon miracles, they're getting together again. the talk has been that it's entirely for the money they'll make doing these shows with the counting crows. but this is what it made me think:
--------------
as i sit here checking airline ticket prices to l.a., i think it necessary to mention that there's no other band i would fly across the country to see. maybe now is the right time for toad to return. i mean, in my opinion, music sucks right now. im so sick of that one band that's on the radio. you know the one, there's like twenty five incarnations of it, but they all sound pretty much like creed? then there's the white vine stripe hive strokes? nothing like recycling music i already have from the 70's there guys. very (un)impressive.
or, god forbid, the american idol singing robots. (shudder)
maybe it's time for actual musicianship to return. truth, sentimentality and honest emotion in music. music the artist wrote themselves. imagine that. i never realized how much i would miss the bands i loved in high school and college. most people move on to new music, but i still haven't found anything to replace those songs i loved so much. and i still haven't seen bands play live that move me the way toad and their contemporaries did. and we're talking hundreds and hundreds of live bands i've seen play during the last 10 years. to this day, there are around 10 cds i will listen to all the way through not wanting to skip any songs at all, and four of them are toad. i think that says a lot. hell, another three are bands admittedly influenced by toad.
so yeah, it's time for ttws. at least im grateful for the possibilities it presents.
all for the money? i do not care. if im ever rich, i'll give half of it to you toad the wet sprocket, simply for coming over to my house and playing Something's Always wrong a couple of times. if this really starts something new, will i throw away my lapdog stuff? no. glen phillips cd/dvd etc? no. will i still buy anything they put out? of course. but will i sing along at the top of my lungs to a new toad cd or a live show? of course i will. long live toad the wet sprocket. i've missed you.
