It’s sad that the people who go out trying to save the world by helping one person at a time will never realize that they are in fact the ones who need the most help.
They’ll never understand that not everyone needs help or saving. Sometimes the people we care most about who we see going downhill, need to go downhill. They need to fail, get hurt or crash. It’s their life. So what if it’s not the kind of life you chose, or agree with or understand. You don’t need to. All you need to do is keep your mouth shut and be their friend. That’s all they want. They don’t want to be saved or helped. They just want a friend.
It’s easy for us to sit and judge others. It’s not so easy to sit and watch them ruin their lives. It’s not up to us to change that. We can’t change other people. We can only change ourselves. If our friends want to go out and ruin their lives than it’s up to them. We can go along for the ride and live our lives with them or we can turn our back and let them do it alone. Either way, it’s your choice. If you can’t watch, don’t.
It reminds me of a part in Rocky IV when Apollo is fighting the Russian and he is getting his brains beat out. Rocky, Apollo’s best friend is in his corner yelling and yelling trying to help his friend. At the end of the round Rocky threatens to stop the fight. Apollo looks his friend dead in his eyes, blood pouring down his face and says, “I gotta fight him. You gotta promise me, you’re not gonna stop this fight. You don’t stop this fight. No matter what. NO MATTER WHAT!”
Just like that, Rocky watches his best friend go back into the ring and fight. Facing a challenge they both know Apollo can’t overcome, yet Rocky lets him try and Apollo fights his heart out. Apollo is getting beaten, worse and worse, as everyone begs Rocky to throw in the towel. Rocky knows he should and wants to but he knows that he can’t do that to his friend. Apollo chose his life as a fighter, he chose this fight and he chose not to quit, not matter what. Rocky didn’t like it, agree with it or understand it, but he respected it. He kept his promise by not stopping the fight, watching his best friend get killed in the ring.
Apollo and Rocky both knew that Apollo would probably be killed in the ring. Apollo knew it and so did Rocky. Rocky knew he couldn’t change a thing Apollo did but he still stuck by him.
At Apollo’s funeral Rocky says the following: “I guess what matters is what he stood for, what he lived for, and what he died for. You always did everything the way you wanted it. And I didn't understand that, but now I understand.”
We may not enjoy watching people ruin their lives or live their lives in different manners than us but it’s up to them. It’s their life.
Let them live it.
“Maybe you don't know what I'm talking about now, but believe me you will when it's over. You will when it's over.” -Apollo
