So Jess *may* have a car of her own soon. My grandpa bought himself an 01' Mustang GT V8 Convertible last week and he wants Jess to have it so she'll have a car for college.
Somehow I think dad will nix this idea really quick, since he's the one paying for all of her car insurance.
I love my poppop, but he really doesn't think things like this through. My sister barely works (one day a week this summer), has no bills or responsibilities, and doesn't understand the concept of the word "save." She doesn't currently pay for gas, insurance, maintenance etc. I don't see how she'd even be able to pay for gas and parking at UD. She also have very little driving experience since she never had a car in high school.
He's very disappointed because mom and I pointed out some of the practical issues involved here. I honestly don't think he ever considered the costs involved in giving a V8 convertible sports car to an 18 year old. He was also totally unaware that a V8 Stang sitting on Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's simply cannot be driven in the winter.
I'd float the idea of giving her my Mazda in exchange for the Mustang, but it wouldn't even be practical for me, given cost of maintenance, gas, and insurance costs. I like the Mazda. It gets me from A to B reliably and without costing me much.
I honestly think he should give it to my mother (scary I know) if he's dead set on giving it away to someone. It could be insured under my dad as the primary on their insurance plan due to mom's driving history, and then they can give the Solara to Jess. That way all mom would have to do is pick up an extra set of wheels and some snows. There's no way in hell she'd make it to our parking spot in Wilmington without them.
He said he'd sell it and get something else if it didn't work out for Jessica. That'd be terrible since he just bought the damn thing. I told him he should just keep it and drive it himself. He's 86, he should have some fun with a cool car.
I dunno, I guess I remember what kind of a driver I was at 18, and I had far more experience than Jessica has at her age. There's a reason I drove a Corolla and Civic from 17-21. Well there was the Fiero, but we know how well that worked out (and that never even saw snow.)
It is a pretty nice car though, and loud as hell. What surprised me is how little leg room I had when I took it for a spin. My legs were cramped even with the seat all the way back and I'm only 6"1.
