Work--Too Personal?

Homosexuals are invading our workplaces.

Okay.

I don't know what it's like for other people in their work environment but there is something about working in a small office in Northern Utah that makes people want to get to know you. And I'm not talking about the cheap conversation about my major or what I'm going into or how long until I graduate.

People at work want to get...personal.

They want to know what brought me here to Utah, why I transferred from BYU, where and who I live with, etc.

You know--the nitty gritty.

Is it just Utah?

Is it just my job at Weber State?

Being openly gay at work isn't always the easiest.

At my last job down in UVU, I was out to my boss but it was easy because he was a clinical therapist. Here at Weber, my trainer is a graduating Weber student who is going on her mission and wants to hear all about missions and my conversion stories. My boss is also very interested in me as he served a mission to Taiwan and is familiar with the Asian cultures.

It's just moving a little too fast...and this is coming from a commit-a-phobe.

I guess it just bothers me that I don't know what to do when my coworker peers are VERY conservatively LDS (my trainer asked me to not put on offensive music when I plugged my iPod in) and they are starting to become part of my life. It's like they are weaseling their way into my life to get at the big truth.

It's interesting how keeping up this active LDS facade feels more like a facade than anything else LDS and gay in my life in the last little while.

weber, coming out, work
