After watching the Colbert Report, I'm reminded of an age-old lesson that all people should heed.

People who are not doctors should not write books about medicine and health.

Daniel Smith, author of Muses, Madmen, and Prophets: Rethinking the History, Science, and Meaning of Auditory Hallucination, who from his interview, was using rare and uncommon examples to explain that hearing voices is not as bad the public makes it out to be. Apparently hearing voices is perfectly common and because (allegedly) many people cope fine with it, it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Citing famous people like Moses and Socrates is not exactly the best example that hearing voices isn't as bad as it seems.

Seriously, psychology should be discussed by psychologists, not somebody who's read over a bunch of reports and articles on the subject. I know I haven't met many schizophrenics in my days but I watched a few taped interviews with some. Mental disorders are not something to downplayed...
