Site Still Suspended

Nov 28, 2006 22:17

It's official: I’m losing my mind. The next two weeks are going to test my sanity. Either I wind up crazy because I have been studying non-stop (slash not enough), or because the people around me have such a nonchalant attitude towards their upcoming finals. I don't know when I decided I cared. When I was at Waterloo, I didn't give a damn about how other people did in school. I was too busy trying sleeping. Or when I wasn't sleeping, I was too busy thinking about how much I wanted to be asleep.

Now despite the fact that I still tend to sleep in through my morning classes, I can at least be satisfied knowing that it's because I'm dumb enough to stay up until 2, or 3, or 4, and not because I'm sick again. This leaves me with a lot of spare time to be filled with worrying about the people around me and how the odds are so against them and they don't seem to care. It's nice to know the overachiever in me is recovering.

My site is still suspended. I've been thinking about whether or not I would want to move to another host after I recover my entries and templates. I don't think that will happen. Leaving them won't teach them anything; I don't hold sway over a large portion of their revenue. I don't even hold sway over a small portion of their revenue. I hold sway over a miniscule portion of their revenue that probably pays for two chocolate bars a month in a vending machine.

That said I'm still disgusted with the way I've been treated. The site was suspended on November 18, and it being a Saturday meant I was trashed when I noticed and didn't contact Support until the Sunday afternoon. They got back to me that night saying my (other) site was still up and running. My bad for forgetting I had two packages with them. So I responded. Then I waited. I waited, and waited, and waited. On Tuesday November 21 they got back to me telling me what had happened.

I had been running mt-rebuild.pl, a plugin to rebuild the archives in Movable Type. They had discovered a security vulnerability in the script and banned me, in regards to their ToS, since I was responsible for anything on my site. It was $25 to reactivate it and remove the script, and $75 an hour if I needed them to fix it.

Keep in mind that November 21 is my birthday. I was knee deep in projects, and already not enjoying my day. I had been suspended in the middle of revamping my design (ironically enough) to remove the need for the script. Three days is a long time when you've lost your only means of procrastination. So I sent them a reply email telling them that they were really unprofessional in regards to their handling of this situation seeing as they had contacted me with a problem about that script before. I told them I'd pay the fee because I knew better than to argue about the ToS.

On Thursday November 23 they got back to me saying they would make an invoice for US$25 ASAP and as soon as it was paid I would have access to fix the problem. Well, it is now November 28. I hope for Support's sake they’re just being douchebags, not that it makes this ok. This problem should have taken, no joke, THIRTY MINUTES to resolve (not counting communication time). If I had taken this long to fix this issue on my CO-OP PLACEMENT, I would have failed the work term and been fired. This is apparently Level Three Support.

So after this is all sorted out I'm going to post this and the Site Suspended Thought Log. I'll probably revamp the style sheet along the way. I just needed this break to vent my frustration so I can return to Linear Algebra and cover the topics from today's lecture (which I didn't attend so I could shop). Hopefully this will be sorted out soon, and I will have one less thing to be annoyed about.
