greetings from cali

hi. sorry i haven't been updating the journal while i've been away from new york..i've been having just an amazing time here and tonight was definately the highlight of the trip.
i went to an open mic poetry reading at a bar/club/cafe/thing called DALVA in san francisco. very very cool setting with lots of great poets doing their thing. i did my best to be social and introduced myself to some people, one of whom was a stunningly beautiful girl from ireland (i was pretty impressed with myself that i actually just said "hello" and introduced myself without hesitation). while she read i was completly and totally blown away. you know those scenes in movies where the rest of the room kinda fades, all incoherent chatter goes silent and the spot light intensifies on the object of interest (or like the "Dream Weaver" scene from waynes world...)...well, it was kinda like that. after the open mic i wound up talking to some people and got invited to tag along with them to another reading out infront of a subway station. it was fucking fantastic. tons of people just jumping up one after another spitting out some of the best spoken word i've ever heard(being that i never get the opportunity to go out and attend these types of functions...but thats not to downplay the people who were performing, its just a sad sad fact). i then got invited to another poetry reading tomorrow night with the same group of people. as i left i wrote the girl a little poem and put my email address at the bottom, just in case i don't make it. Tomorrow night is my last night in california and i'm pretty sure i'm gonna go, but i would like to spend a bit more time with steve before i go to arizona and visit craig. I miss my brother so much when im home. Even though most of the time we spend is just watching dvds or eating, when i' m with him i feel the most at home, even if its not in the house we grew up together in.

so...this trip so far has been wonderful. i've rode a bike up Mt Diablo as far as i could before i thought i'd die of sun stroke, i've filled my swimming quota for the summer, i saw some cool touristy stuff, got to walk around by myself in a city i've never been to and just explored while thinking over lots and lots and LOTS of different things going on in my life, took a bunch of cool pictures, and met some great people along the way.
i really needed this trip badly. i didn't realize as i book the flight, but this has been one of the best decisions i have ever made.

the other day i saw just an amazing thing that i tried desperately to capture with my camera but it didn't do the scene any justice.
a woman was begging for change right next to two guys doing one of those "spend fifty cents to crush a penny with a picture" machines. i just stood and watched as the two guys took what had to be five minutes figuring out just how to throw away their fifty cents to get back a flattend penny. the lady just glanced at them and kept the steady rythmn of her broken styrafoam coffee cup.
life sometimes is just awesome when you stand back and watch it play out in front of you.

when i go home i'm eating a slice of pizza right away. i miss pizza.
when i go home i'm never eating a burrito again until i come back here.
BURRITOS THE SIZE OF MY FOREARM!!! HOW CAN I POSSIBLY GO BACK TO TACO BELL'S TINY PISSANT LITTLE "BURRITOS?"

i'm looking forward to seeing craig in arizona. i miss him a lot.

thats pretty much the update.
go back doing whatever it was you were doing.

see you when i get home.
