The XBox 360 Riots

Nov 23, 2005 20:24

What have people come to? People are beating each other up to get an XBox 360. A GAMING CONSOLE! It means that we're now a bunch of spoiled idiots running around in a blind frenzy over the latest and greatest games. I mean, first that stampede in Pennsylvania over $50 laptops (they were used; a school was selling them), now some crazy stuff over XBox 360s. You know, if you wait a few weeks, the price will probably drop $100. This is pathetic...I can't imagine what Black Friday is going to be like.

Minot boy assaulted, robbed of new video game

MINOT, N.D. (AP) - A 17-year-old boy who was one of the first in this city to buy one of the much-anticipated new Xbox 360 video games was assaulted and robbed as he left the store, police say.

The boy was attacked by two males around 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, when stores nationwide began selling the new Xbox system. The attackers took the game valued at about $450 and fled on foot.

The boy suffered minor injuries to his face, police said.

Lt. Jason Olson said authorities believe the robbery was premeditated, with the assailants waiting outside the Game Crazy store for an easy victim. He said the 17-year-old boy was alone.

People lined up at stores around the country to get one of the games. The new consoles also can play music, display photos and show DVDs.

Most retailers have refused to say how many of the consoles they have in stock, but Microsoft has said that an ambitious plan to launch the console worldwide within a few weeks will mean fewer of the games initially in North America.

In North Dakota, people formed long lines at stores on Monday despite chilly weather.

In Fargo, friends Nathan Winge, 22, and Thomas Ohnstad, 20, got in line at a local Best Buy store at 6 p.m. Sunday, staying in a tent erected by store workers who wanted their own chance to buy an Xbox.

Dan Weak, 37, made the 90-mile trip from Cavalier to a Grand Forks store to buy a game he planned to share with his son.

"I've been gaming for 30 years," he said. "It's for both of us."

University of North Dakota student Justin Burslie had a different motive.

"I'm selling mine on ebay," he said. "I have to pay the rent."

Two 360s taken in Virginia armed robbery

A Stafford, Virginia, Electronics Boutique store was the scene of an armed robbery this morning. According to sources, the perpetrator made off with two Xbox 360 systems, forcing the store manager to hand them over at gunpoint.

Sources tell GameSpot the local police responded quickly, cordoned off the store, and immediately pursued the thief. The thief was apprehended shortly afterward.

Because the police consider the heist an ongoing criminal investigation, store employees were reluctant to discuss details of the robbery. But as of press time, the store is open, and all systems are back to normal.

"We're all fine, and everything is cool," a store staffer told GameSpot.
