Just got off work early. Pretty good day, overall. Spent the first hour or so milling around waiting for everyone to be ready for a big command picture, then another half-hour figuring out how to arrange everyone. Which meant I spent most of that time talking gaming with a couple of friends.
After that, the only real work I did all day (or, in fact, so far this week): I coordinated the removal of three 35-foot radio antennas from the ship by crane. Which was an experience, being I've never done anything of the sort before. Things went fine, though (which is to say, the antennas are gone now, with no harm having come to them, the ship, or any people who happened to be in the area). Chances are that even though they're only being refurbished and re-painted, I won't even be on this ship when they get back. Oh, well. At least they'll be grey instead of pink when they do come back (the sun out here does strange things to the cheap paint the Navy uses).
Followed it up with, of all things, softball. Since the captain is moving on to bigger and better things at the end of next week, he wanted to get the whole crew together and do something, and that something was softball. Dear lord, do we all suck mightily at that game. I was pretty sure I was going to be terrible since I haven't played in fifteen years or so, and I was -- but no more so than anyone else. And I was smart enough to volunteer to play right field, meaning I had very few opportunities to showcase how utterly inept I am at that game. In the end, my team won 16-15 with a walk-off RBI single in the last inning (I think it was the 8th, but I'm not sure. We just sort of played until everyone started getting dehydrated, then declared that the next inning would be the "last" one). I was 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. I also learned that in softball, you can strike out on a foul. What the hell is that?
The mosquitoes are still pretty bad out here. I had to switch from regular Off! to the "Deep Woods" variety -- 100% DEET. Brain damage, ahoy!
