Mike shuts down racist pricks
So this chain email comes in from a friend of mine. Apparently, chain emails are the newest front in the War on Tolerance. Though somewhat hard to follow, essentially the author is saying that immigration is ruining Canada. The author's flawed logic and sometimes humourous errors made it too much fun to tear apart. First I have posted the email in the traditional terrible formatting that comes with chain letters. After that, you will see me rip apart, line by line, the entire email. I quote the original in italics, then explain why they are utterly wrong. If you don't agree, or want to add to this, feel free to chime in. These are the discussions which shape public views, and in turn, the course of history.

Who writes this crap? I'm not sure that patriotism and racism can ever be separated, because every now and then, people like this get them confused.

The problem with uneducated people making bold claims about their country is that they often resort to using ambiguous terms like "Country of Choice" because they do not acutally know what they are talking about. Do you mean Canada is everyone's choice for a country? We only have 32 million of the world's 6.5 billion people, so that can't be it. I'm guessing you mean it's a choice for many immigrants, and that's fair, considering we have one of the lowest population densities in the world. So what are these "changes we're afraid of?"

I just can't stop laughing at this one. "What about MY RIGHTS?" Poor xenophobe lost all his rights? Well, no. This has nothing to do with rights. You can talk about Christmas anytime you want. You have the right to say "Merry Christmas" in July if you want. There has never been any kind of law prohibiting people from saying "Merry Christmas." What you are referring to is a practise adopted by most modern companies so that their non-Christian patrons do not feel left out. It's called making money. Sure, maybe while you're at work you can no longer say Merry Christmas, but the second you clock out, you may shout it to your hearts content. When will they do something about YOUR RIGHTS? They don't have to, your rights never changed.
Further, are you forgetting that, since we colonized North America, there have been Jews living here? Despite popular opinion, Jews didn't stop celebrating Christmas when the political correctness movement was born, in fact, they never celebrated it. They have always been here, celebrating a different holiday over their "Winter Break."

Really? Shouldn't we both adapt? I know the immigrants certainly are. English as a Second Language is an enormous business both in Canada and overseas. In fact, there are currently over 20 000 jobs available to Canadians in the ESL field because so many either wish to learn before coming here, after coming here, or to do buisness with us. That's not just adaptation, that's job creation for thousands of Canadians with Liberal Arts majors and no job. What a nice thing those immigrants are doing for us. That sure is a far more peaceful method of moving into North America than those of the "original" Europeans. (In case you forgot, we slaughtered the aboriginal population and took over the land) In either case, Canadians should adapt to a degree. And that degree is to stop worrying about whether or not they celebrate Christmas and worry about yourself. Again, if there is a more specific complaint you have, state it, and we'll see what we can do.

In fact, we have something in Canada called citizenship which can only be obtained by immigrants through proper conduct in Canada. Without citizenship, one does not have suffrage. Without suffrage, one cannot vote. Without the vote, one cannot affect change in the Canadian government. Therefore, without citizenship, one cannot "dilute the sovereignty" of this country.

Nice line, did you pick that line up at a grade four Remembrance Day play? I like how you evoke the idea of seeking freedom. Try putting "Falun Gong" and "China" into a search engine and maybe you'll see that, holy shit, these people are coming here for the same reason we did. Freedom. As Canadians, we're nice people. We harbour tortured refugees. It's called empathy.

I do agree with you in one case: We do have our own culture, society and language. And the only thing that will cause those to be abandoned is YOU. Just like shouting merry christmas, you have the right to celebrate your own culture and speak your own language. Immigrants do not take that away. If you're worried about your culture being wiped out by immigrants, start having kids.
We speak ENGLISH/FRENCH , not Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of
our society, learn the language!
Again, i'll refer you to that 20 000 jobs (statistic taken from http://www.oxfordseminars.com) in English education that is available to westerners. That is because there is an immense amount of immigrants wishing to learn english. Type "TESL," "TEFL" or TESOL" into a search engine and you'll see hundreds of such opportunities. I'd like to remind you also that the brain functions required to learn language are at their peak during childhood. This means that the 60 year old Chinese man who comes into your store but you cannot understand isn't just some lazy foreigner, but perhaps actually is working quite hard on his English.
"We Stand On Guard For Thee" is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan.. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women.......on Christian principles............founded this nation..... and this is clearly documented.It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools.
We Stand On Guard For Thee, in our National anthem, is preceeded by "O Canada." Thus we're standing on guard for Canada, not Jesus. Im not sure how you're bringing Christianity into that line, but...
None of that is important of course because "We Stand On Guard For Thee" is NOT OUR NATIONAL SLOGAN. Our national slogan is "A mari usque ad mare" which is Latin for "From Sea to Sea." The funny part about this whole thing is that national slogans are the kind of thing that end up on, well, immigration entrance tests.
"If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home.........because God is part of our culture. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from."
Again, you still have the right to practise religion as you wish. Just because immigrants exercise that right as well, doesnt mean they're trying to take over your religion.
