No, I like to think of it as CONTINUITY. Or a DECENT PROGRESSING STORY LINE. Or something equally important that Splinter Cell lacks that I have to type in ALL CAPS.

Well the point you're missing is that the game is just so much more fun to play and the new plot is the daddy and its gonna be even more fun to play.
Play being the key word as you don't so much play MSG as you do watch it.
