This past saturday was the little league I decided to join in on for Magic: The Gathering. It was the first tourney I've played in and it was damn fun. Me and Stephan went out to Langley early in the afternoon to look for some key cards for the day. I found what I needed, at a price I'd rather not have paid.
We headed out to Metrotown and arrived early enough to get some good eats at the food court. The tourney started at 1600 and we arrived about 15 minutes early.
This is one of the first times I was going to be playing this deck. I'd tested it out against Dan for one match and Stephan for just a set. This however was a lot different. The quality of cards and decks was very high indeed. I ran my newly finished all black "Bad Moon on the Rise" deck and Stephan ran his newly retouched "Gruul FTW" (or whatever he calls it).
Match by match analysis:
Game 1 vs. U/G/w Teferi Control
I came in expecting a lot of control and to no surprise my first opponent was running control. Luckily I can be a little to fast early for control to keep up. He one initiative and went first. I layed a first turn rack, second turn bad moon and was met by two consecutive Coiling Oracles. I pounded away with my Hypnotic Specter and held my opponents 4 creatures at bay with a sudden spoiling x2. Eventually he cleared my board but it wasn't enough and I just kept coming. Game 2 was pretty quick, I emptied his hand as much as I could and outlasted the little control he had and smashed through with more Hypnotic goodness.
Win: 2-0 (1-0)
Game 2 vs. R/W Boros Deck Wins
Weenie games like this are generally a coin flip if both people can draw well. I didn't. I started game one off at 5 decent cards and went down quickly with only 2 lands and 3 Sudden Deaths in my hand. The next game started slow and I paid for it, after finally getting some control I was down too low on life and got burned to death.
Loss: 0-2 (1-1)
Game 3 vs. G/B Dredge Return
Pre sideboard I had no chance without some creatures. I put some forth but my opponent ran well enough to keep them at bay. He eventually killed me with his stupid Hellkite. I sideboarded the appropriate answer: Cremate, sadly I didn't draw it and met a sadly similar fate.
Loss: 0-2 (1-2)
Game 4 vs. U/W Triscuit Tron
I put my Ghost Quarters in just incase I ran into the many different 'Tron' decks. I did and I hit the cards in both the sets I won and barely lost the second but for drawing 3 land at a crucial time in the game. I won handily in the first set and he scraped one out in the seond. In the 3rd I jumped on him with a 4th turn 7 damage swing and it proved too much as I won several turns later thanks to The Rack.
Win: 2-1 (2-2)
I ended up finished 9th of the 19 people who attended. Which had I won maybe one or two sets in the games I lost may have been a place or three higher. Still a good outing for a new deck and some insight on what to change.
Stephan, for the record, went 0-4 thanls to a lot of control and some bad luck and drawing.
Now I mst go to Friday Night Magic tourneys. I'll see what I can do.
Awesomeness,
Michael Z
