It's... yeah, it's not looking very good for this book. Let's leave it at that.

I didn't BUILD the thing! )

And whether he's guilty or innocent, the Ministry would want to know either way, right?

You might think that. However, considering they just put him in Azkaban without a trial and threw away the key the first time, you'd probably be thinking wrong. The main concern for the Ministry is covering up their own mistakes and making it look like they have everything under control.

Any similarity to RL politicians is *entirely* coincidental.

Yes, but at some point this goes beyond political commentary and becomes full-blown self-parody. Any politician worth his salt knows the easiest way to cover up mistakes it to avoid making them in the first place. I can certainly understand why Fudge wouldn't want to re-open the Black case after so long, but he'd have to weigh the risk against the political fallout of Peter being alive and the public finding out about it. He can apologize for throwing the wrong man in jail twelve years ago, but if the real killer's gone uncaptured, that's a mistake he's made today, which hurts him at the next election.

I could certainly understand Fudge wanting to investigate the matter quietly, if not secretly, but the notion that he'd just as soon not know is ridiculous. If he's that protective of his job, he'd still want the truth, if only so he'd know which way to spin things if it ever came out.

It's also worth noting that Fudge wasn't actually responsible for Siruis' imprisonment in the first place, so he's also making the mistake of throwing away an opportunity to point out how much better things are than under his predecessor.

So it seems that man really does suck at just about everything.

Barty Crouch Sr was never actually the Minister. He pretty much lost the chance to ever become one when his son turned out to be a Death Eater. Not sure why Fudge feels he needs to cover up for Crouch.

It doesn't look like Fudge even believes Peter is still alive. I think we're just supposed to believe he's that incredibly stupid. As you already know, he ended up losing his job anyway in book 6, when it came apparent Harry had been telling the truth about what happened in book 4.

Well, that's what I'm saying. Rowling can't have it both ways. Either Fudge ignores justice to protect his own career, or he does it because he's too stupid. But if he's a shrewd politician, he shouldn't have lost his job so easily, and if he's stupid, then it shouldn't be very difficult for Dumbledore to convince him to reopen the case.

No, from what I've seen, Fudge's problem is that he's just lazy. He probably knows there's more going on than what he sees, but he doesn't want to put in the effort.
