The other problem with Aeon is that even if the movie were 90% faithful, it would still lack plot or complex character motivations. It would need to be 100% faithful and then rely on the macabre pretty combined with hopeless nihilism. Doesn't look like it had the guts to do that, so, *shrugs* I'm not offended just a bit let down.
With Catwoman, they tossed out a whole mass of backstory, plot and conflicted motivations, in addition to the complete break with visual recognition. They went and shot themselves in the foot with that movie. With Aeon, I think they were sort of trying but the source material is sort of meh.
I add it to the list of "another action movie with a female lead that flops because the producers don't realize they need to write her with solid motivations instead of relying on pretty". So then everyone else is stupid and claims that sci-fi chicks just don't sell when that's not the problem at all. If I imagine either of those two movies with a male lead, they would still have flopped for lack of compelling plot or driving character motivations. Then I wonder if it's pure statistical correlation and we just notice the chick-flops more because there are so few of them in general or if there really is casual sexism involved and they're failing at a higher rate than equivalent movies with male leads. Like Doom, and stuff.
