Honestly, it's not the character I have a problem with. The problem is that this book is so blasted slow that the character becomes repetitive. How many times do I have to see Hermione storm off in a huff whenever Ron shows up? How many times do I have to see Ron get all flustered because he can't figure out how to set things right?

Don't get me wrong: he's a complex character with weaknesses and strengths, just like a lot of the other characters in this book. He's stuck between a family who treats him like a baby, girls who like him for his more favorable traits, and other boys who kind of write him off as an affable loser. What makes him work is that he's got no room to breathe, so he's constantly cycling between these different situations. Not surprisingly, this stresses him out, because he just can't figure out who he really is.

The problem is I keep getting the same message over and over again from this book. Ron's a jerk to Hermione, and he's too stubborn to knock it off, and he's too dense to realize that he's taking out his frustrations on everything around him. Rowling hammered this point home three chapters ago, and she's still beating it into the ground. This is why I've decided to turn him into a robot from outer space. This way the character stays fresh, even if the author refuses to go anywhere with his personality.
