Epileptic Orca Became Ill Last Week
SAN DIEGO -- An epileptic killer whale died at SeaWorld, park officials said Wednesday.
Splash became ill last week and died Tuesday at the San Diego theme park, SeaWorld public affairs officials said.
The 15-year-old male orca suffered from epilepsy and was given medication daily, park officials said. Last week, Splash's health began to deteriorate and his appetite dropped.
Results from a necropsy performed Tuesday won't be known for several weeks, park officials said.
The last killer whale to die at SeaWorld was a 25-year-old female named Bjossa who succumbed to a lung infection in October 2001.
Born in captivity at a Canadian marine park in 1989, Splash had been at SeaWorld since 1992.
MIAMI -- One teenager died and police arrested another Tuesday night in Miami following what investigators called a fatal joyride.
Police said it all started when a group of juveniles stole three utility work trucks from an unknown location. Police officials said the teens spotted police in Miami and tried to get away, but two of the drivers lost control and crashed.
One of the trucks slammed into a tree and Ford Explorer at Northwest 13th Court and 67th Street. Police said the driver jumped out of the vehicle, but was crushed under one of the wheels. He died at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Police did not release the teen's identity.
Another truck crashed into parked cars at 1201 N.W. 67th St. The third truck was found undamaged down the street. Police were able to arrest one of the teens.
