Let's discuss zombies for a moment.
I'm guessing most everyone has at least a vague idea what a movie zombie is. Their intelligence rests somewhere between 'brain dead' and 'rabid dog', they're usually in some form of physical decay, and constantly hungering for the flesh of the untainted. You can add the fact that there's usually more of them than you can shake a really big stick at, but they're still towards the lower rungs of threatening monster rankings.
Now, this here Dawn of the Dead movie strays a little bit from the patented zombie formula in that they can run. Unless I've completely forgot something, this is the only difference between DotD zombies and zombies from anywhere else.
Now, the idea was put forth yesterday that the zombies in this movie were stupid, and that the movie was pretty bad as a result. All instances of character development were ignored, all other instances of interesting uniqueness were ignored, and the complete lack of techno-music/dog jump-kicking was ignored. The only thing seen by the purveyor of this opinion was that the zombies could run, and that the movie was bad.
Am I the only one that goes "Huh?"
I realize the movie may not be great. I consider it rather good, but I have my own reasoning for my opinions. But I still utterly fail to see how zombies with increased speed=bad zombie movie=bad movie, period.
The sole reasoning I could see behind this is that a zombie, being in a state of physical decay, could probably not accelerate to anything over a slow gait. But then, if one makes this arguement, how the zombie able to do anything considering its advanced state of undead-ness becomes an impossability.
I think I had some more to say on this subject, but the mini-rant has finally given me an idea for my English essay. Bye!
