need to rant...again.
I just read an article (in usa today, online) about austrailia and it's governments newly proposed internet filter.
a continent wide filter on every server.
the proposed filter is publicly stated to stop "child prn", terrorism, and "excessive" sex and violence.
first of all it could slow internet access by up to 86%.
...nice to see broadband users surfing at "dial-up" speeds. ;)
second of all - the best filters in the world still "let through" unwanted material and accidentally block other, educational, material.
third - the list of prohibited sites is arbitrary and not open to public scrutiny.
fourth- the part most haven't noticed is the "optional" block on "adult content".
...optional? really? are we supposed to believe that?
... what do you mean this isn't about censorship?
fifth - the proponents of the 128 million dollar project say it will stop chld prn.
..but the experts say that public websites aren't were that stuff is.
...why not put that money into effectively finding and stopping it?
egypt and iran have arrested people for blogging. england has shut down sites for album covers. the us justice department has shut down sites because stories contained love stories between 15 and 16 yr olds...
(still minors, even if in real life teenagers fall in love... so much for judy bloom...)
so, yet again people in "power" decide to censor.
and they use "the children", or "the terrorists", or "it's thursday" as an excuse.
if it's your child...you buy your own filter.
and responsible people will make sure it works.
don't tell me what I can or cannot read/see/write/do/eat/believe !!!!!!!!!!!!
