After a long night at the bar (working, not drinking), Mike had gathered up his tips and hopped on the subway, wanting to get his ass home as soon as he could. He had had a rehearsal for this new troupe he was trying to get together before work, and then ten hours on his feet with no shirt on (that always made him feel good, like a real ( Read more... )

Sam was sat in the living room, in shorts and a tank playing games on the X Box he and Mike shared. They'd lived together since graduating High School, the best of best friends. He loved Mike like his own flesh and blood and honestly, was happy to live with his brotha.

He'd not heard the knock to the front door just a few minutes before, having his headset on as he battled others all over the world. He was on a roll that was only broken by hearing the banging at the door. And a voice saying words that were utterly insane.

"Dude..." he sighed, stopping the game and pulling off the headset. He walked to the front door, still talking loudly as he opened it. "If this is some weird sort of improv game you've got in mind..." door opened, his brow furrowed in confusion when he saw Mike there with a bundle in his arms. "...you're not supposed to bring home a prop when playing this game!"

“I haven't played an improv game since college and you know it, I'm the second-worst actor in the universe,” Mike said as the door opened and he adjusted the baby-bundle in his arms. “I'm shouting about there being a baby on our doorstep because there is a baby on our doorstep.

He the baby up for Sam to see. “See? This is a baby. Explain the baby, please.”

Sam just stared at the baby in front of him with a stunned look in his eyes. He didn't know why, but with the way Mike held the baby up in his arms he had a need to just take hold and make sure this was real. That this baby was there and he wasn't having some whacked out dream. "Let me...." he shifted, moving to slip his hands under and around the little baby to take hold of her. "I don't know. I have no idea."

Mike passed the baby over to Sam with no complaint, cooing a little at it him her the baby as he did so, unable to really help it. “Well,” he said, really looking for the first time. “This is a little white baby, so definitely not mine.”

"Well, it can't be mine," of course it easily could be - and was - but Sam was in utter denial. This couldn't be true or real. You didn't just end up with a baby on your doorstep. "There anything in that basket?" He nodded down towards it and, with a tiny frown, looking down at the baby, he began to walk in to their apartment properly.

Mike had to bite his lip to stop himself from making a joke about how she was obviously Sam's because she already had giant lips, but he realized that this was ... probably not the time.

He'd keep that one in his back pocket for later, though, for sure.

"Let me see," Mike said, picking up the basket and starting to look through it. "Looks like there's a note here, bro," he told Sam.

"Yeah? What uh, does it say?" Sam asked his friend as he slowly started to rock the baby in his arms. She looked like she was starting to stir and the more he kept moving, the more likely he was to keep her asleep. The last thing they needed to add to this headache was a screaming baby.

Mike opened the note, read it, and all of the blood drained from his face. He locked eyes with his favorite roommate. (“I'm your only roommate,” Sam would say when Mike called him that), and held the note out. “We should switch, dude,” he finally said. “You need to read this.”

"I do?" he looked at Mike and down the bundle in his arms. After a moment, he carefully stepped closer to hand the baby over to Mike, and took the note from him.

It took him a minute to read it and, taking a few steps back to reach to the wall to steady himself, he swallowed thickly. Oh... God. "I-- no... no, no way."

Mike was watching Sam's face closely as he read over the letter, rocking the baby as he did so. He wanted to make sure his friend didn't have a heart attack or something on the spot there.

“You think it's true?” He couldn't help but ask.
