Mike's wife had promised him that she would try to fly out to Hawaii on a last-minute plane ticket. And while Mike was very excited to see her, he had a problem: his guest hadn't shown any sign of leaving.
Sam had needed a week to harass her high-roller client who had welshed on his gambling debts to pay up. Then she'd gotten a tip on a potential new clients who happened to be doing business in Chinatown, requiring her to stay a little longer. It was always fun to watch her work, and Mike hadn't minded that she kept extending her stay. He really missed having his Las Vegas buddies around.
But there was no way she was staying while he had his wife there for the weekend. Mike thought about it for a while, trying to come up with a diplomatic way to get her out of there for a few days. (He didn't need to be so tactful. If the tables were turned, he knew that she was just order him to take a hike.) When the invitation to Parents Weekend arrived, it gave him an idea.
"You know, Sam, I had already booked a portal to Fandom Island to visit Mary. Now I feel awful about skipping out on her," he said casually over lunch.
"Come on, Mike. I'm sure she'd understand that you getting laid trumps hanging out with a buddy," said Sam. "Mary's a survivor. She'll get over it."
"Still, I had everything paid for already... Maybe you should use my reservation and go see her! I'm sure it's been a long time," said Mike. "You girls can catch up and do all that other girl stuff you used to do together."
Sam thought about it for a moment. "It has been a really long time," she finally said. "And it would be nice to hang out with a girlfriend who isn't carrying a screaming child all over the place. Did I tell you about the time Delinda and I got kicked out of the spa because of that brat of hers?"
"Yes, you told me many times," said Mike, sighing. "So I'll give Mary a call and let her know you're coming instead of me."
"You do that. I need to call a few of my clients and let them know I'm going out of town," said Sam, whipping out her cell phone. "Oh, and no handing out any RFB comps while I'm gone. If you do, you'll be sorry."
