“You told Satoshi-san that it would take an extra week to get to his boat right?” Maki lightly tapped the heel of her shoe on the ground impatiently.
“I sure did Maki-san” AIba swiveled around in his chair to face the woman.
“Good,” Maki stopped tapping her foot. “Everything is going to plan. I should be able to get my Nino back either tomorrow or the day after.”
“Maki-san, can I ask a question?” Aiba scooted a little closer towards Maki.
“What is it?”
“How did you know that Oh-chan would try to contact me as soon as he found Nino and go that far over the International Date Line? It just doesn’t make sense.”
“Satoshi-san can’t go back to land anymore and you’re the closest friend he has who could possibly bring Nino back to shore. And about him sailing that far, it’s pretty easy. He probably wasn’t paying attention. Even if it was only for a short period of time, I was married to him. I should know.” Maki turned around and left. Aiba watched Maki walk away, dumbfounded.
Rice. It was the smell of rice. Freshly cooked white rice. Nino could smell it but he couldn’t believe it. It was something he rarely ate in the past few days on that boat. And now he could actually smell it. The fluffy white rice. It was so close after all this time.
Nino opened his eyes. Bright light flooded his pupils. Sitting up he noticed that Ohno was in the kitchen scooping the freshly cooked rice into two bowls. The sleepy fisherman looked up from the rice and smiled at Nino. He placed the two bowls on the table along with two pairs of chopsticks and a bowl of shredded up tuna. Ohno sat down in front of one of the bowls and patted at the seat next to him.
As if it was a dream Nino got out of bed and sat down next to Ohno. Ohno had already began eating. He had small grains of rice stuck to his hair and the corners of his mouth.
“You’re a messy eater, you know?” Nino smiled from ear to ear, filled with happiness. It’s like the argument with Ohno never happened. What could have possibly made him change like this all the sudden?
But Nino didn’t care. He was just happy to have his Ohno back to normal. Now Nino wouldn’t have to sort out his feelings for him. It felt like a huge weight was lifted off of Nino’s fragile shoulders. He could just enjoy being with Ohno without actually having to define their relationship. Life was easier that way. It was easier for Nino anyways.
But there was something that Nino didn’t know that Ohno did. That previous night Ohno couldn’t sleep. He hear Nino get up. He heard Nino eat. He heard Nino leave the cabin. He heard Nino come back to the cabin several minutes later. Ohno could feel that something was wrong with Nino. He wasn’t happy. He was sad. Just as he was going to reach out to Nino Ohno felt him next to him. He heard every word Nino said. He took every word to heart.
Those simple yet complex words that Nino muttered that night left Ohno in an elated mood. Things couldn’t get better for him. He was so happy he couldn’t concentrate on his meal. Rather, he didn’t want to concentrate on his meal. Ohno only wanted to look at Nino.
“How much longer Aiba-san?” Maki brought a folding chair up next to Aiba and roughly sat herself down in it. Aiba looked up from the complex equipment on his dashboard.
“Not much longer.” Maki shifted her gaze over to clock then back to Aiba.
“How much longer? I’m getting a little impatient here.”
“Well,” Aiba looked back at the complicated machinery. “We should meet up with them in about two hours or so. No guarantees though.”
“Thank you Aiba-san.” Maki stood up with a grin and left the room, leaving the chair next to Aiba. He stared at the empty folding chair for a split moment before going back to his job, maintaining the ship.
Aiba stared out into the ocean. Was this really going to work out okay? Was this even a good idea from the beginning?
Nino’s legs stuck through the spaces between the iron bars that made the fence on the edge of the deck. His legs stretched out of the silhouette of the boat into the sea. Beside him was Ohno’s figure with fishing gear in hand. The two sat in peace on the deck of the boat.
“Ohno-san,” Nino talked to Ohno without facing him. He kept his eyes set on the horizon.
“Yeah Nino-san?” Ohno skillfully attached some bait to a hook. Nino wondered how long it took him to become that good at baiting.
“You know, I wish I could just stay with you forever.” A moment of silence passed between the two men. “Just like this. I like being with you.”
Ohno tousled the black hair with his free hand. He cast his line out into the sea, hoping that a fish will eventually find it’s way towards the bait. The fisherman rested his elbows on the top of the iron rail, placing his head in his hands. He glanced towards Nino then back to the vast, open sea.
“I do too. I really do.” Ohno quietly whispered to himself. “Too bad this isn’t your reality.”
Aiba peered over the complex machinery and out of the window. In the far off distance he could see what appeared to be a small fishing boat. He jumped out of his seat, rushing out of the cabin and down the stairs to go and find Maki. He found her on the deck, wind blowing through her hair. She noticed the man’s presence and turned around.
“What are you doing down here? We’re so close to getting my Kazu back and you’re down here, lallygagging?” Maki turned around. The wind now blew from behind her, ruffling her hair in the opposite direction.
“I thought it might be better to tell you in person.” Aiba pointed to his left. Maki’s eyes followed his index finger. “I can see the ship. We’re ahead of schedule.”
“How much further?” A wide grin spread onto the woman’s face. She was so close to getting her Kazu back. Just so close.
“Less than thirty minutes or so. They just showed up on the horizon so-” Aiba’s thought was interrupted by a hug from Maki. Her arms wrapped around Aiba in pure bliss. His body stiffened up in surprise.
“Now get back to work, Aiba-san.” Maki playfully gave Aiba a push and ran back indoors.
Nino was sound asleep on Ohno’s lap. A single fish kept on nipping at his bait but it never held on long enough for Ohno to reel it in. It circled the hook so many times yet it was hesitant to make the final bite and become the fisherman’s fish. It just couldn’t take that final leap out of it’s comfort zone. Ohno never gave up on that fish and that fish never gave up on Ohno, it was just too scared to take the next step and leave everything behind.
Something tugged on on the line. it wasn’t the fish he thought it was. It was completely different fish from the one before it but it took the lunge and bit the hook. Something about this fish was alluring. Ohno reeled it in and set his gear on the deck next to the fish.
Ohno ran his fingers through Nino’s hair. The silky black strands flowed between the lanky fingers. Nino’s eyes fluttered open. He smiled, seeing Ohno’s face a foot above his.
“Matsumoto-san,” Maki pointed towards a sheet of poster board that contained a crude drawing of Ohno’s boat. “You’ll be getting on first.”
“Wait, Horikita-san,” Jun’s gaze was dubious as he looked at the drawing. “Did you have Sakurai over here draw that for you or something?”
“Yes I did,” She smiled at her lover. “And I think it looks pretty nice if you ask me.”
“Sure,” Jun knew not to go against Maki’s word. He wanted to stay dry and employed. “Whatever you say Horikita-san.”
“We’re here!” Aiba burst through the door, letting in rays of precious sunlight. Maki and two men left the room, ready to make their appearance.
Footsteps could be heard on the deck. That couldn’t be right. Nino was on his lap, staring into his face. Where could the footsteps be coming from?
Nino noticed the sound. He got up from Ohno’s lap and sat upright. He looked around for a few moments but saw nothing. The footsteps stopped. Ohno and Nino stood up.
“Hey there Ninomiya-san,” The two men turned around slowly. Behind them was Jun. He tightly grasped a rope in his hand to the point where his knuckles turned white. “It’s time to come home.”
Jun lunged for the skinny torso and quickly captured him. His hands were tied behind his back with the rope. Ohno stood idly by. He knew there was nothing he could have done for him. Their eyes met.
Nino could hear the sound of heels clicking on the wood of the deck. Soon enough Maki was in plain sight with Sho at her side.
“Nice to see you again Satoshi-san.” Maki smiled at the fisherman. He tried to avoid eye contact. “Seems like everything has been going well for you around here. The boat’s still in good shape.”
“It’s been a while, hasn’t it Maki?” Ohno chuckled a bit then bit his lip softly. This was an encounter that wasn’t supposed to ever happen.
“It really has.” Maki roughly gripped the collar of Nino’s shirt. “Now that I’ve gotten what I’ve came here to collect I’ll be on my way.” She pushed the defenseless Nino towards Jun who dragged him to their ship. Nino tried to resist but Jun was too strong.
Ohno stood still, watching the four walk away. Maki stopped and turned around.
“Farewell Satoshi-san,” Maki smiled briefly. “It’s a shame we don’t keep in contact anymore.”
“It really is.” Ohno waved as Maki turned away from him and walked off of the boat. “Thank you for everything you’ve done.” Maki put her hand up in the air and make a small wave in acknowledgement.
“Ohno-san,” Nino whimpered the older man’s name as we was dragged off of the boat. Jun pushed him on to the deck of the ship face first. “Ohno-san, Ohno-san, why?”
The ship quickly sped away from the tiny fishing boat. Nino quickly rushed to his feet and ran to the edge of the deck. His knuckled quickly turned white as he gripped the railing.
“Satoshi!” Nino yelled out Ohno’s name to the sea. In his diminishing figure Ohno stood still. Nino tried to go over board to reach him again but Jun held him back.
Just before he disappeared into the fading horizon Ohno waved at Nino then returned to his fishing with what seemed to be no remorse at all.
A/N: I know it took me a long time to post this so does a long chapter make up for my laziness? I wrote most of this in the early hours of the morning so my grammar and spelling will be off. I may come back and fix it but then again, I'm a lazy person. Yeah, it's 2:52 in the morning. I should be sleeping.
This story is starting to come together, plot wise, nicely! The story should start dwindling down to a close soon. I have a question for the people who read this far. Feel free to answer it if you can.
Question: I'm sorta curious, what do you guys think is going to happen next? How is the story going to end? Your answers most likely won't be influencing the next chapter. I'm just curious of how the story appears to my audience, that's all.
