I didn’t really know what to expect when I started watching Get Karl Soo Jung! Net critics didn’t say much about it which probably means that it wasn’t widely watched but I gave it a go and I’m pleased that I did. I was always attracted to stories with wedding premises and this series had three wedding settings (Must be the flowers and the dress the bride wears, oh well something about it that makes my interest pique)
The premise of the series starts with a runaway bride, Oh Soo Jung on her wedding day to follow another man to America leaving her overweight fiancé Man Soo distraught and hurt at the altar. Soo Jung ran away because Man Soo failed his Law Exam after the third stage - the interview and was the first man to do so because he could not tell a lie that he would do anything for Soo Jung.
The story moves 8 years later where Man Soo returns to America, all lean and now a successful golf player from the States. Soo Jung is still single, called an old maid but is still trying to make a rich match.
Seeing Man Soo who is going by the name Karl Go, successful and rich, Soo Jung loses no time to get back with him. Man Soo who is out for revenge secretly sets her up by telling her that he is actually poor and is backed up by rich sponsor Woo Tak (who Karl has hired to take up the role of a rich man). Soo Jung immediately sets her sight on Woo Tak and seeks Man Soo’s help. Man Soo and Soo Jung despite themselves grow close and Man Soo different sides of her which he had never seen before. Man Soo begins to doubt whether Soo Jung is the gold digger he made her up to be as he begins to understand her and see through her pride and her sharp tongue. Soo Jung for her part is torn between her heart and her senses.
When I first started watching this, I was expecting some sort of a wacky comedic series (particularly the intros done in English in earlier episodes seems to support this theory). Oh Ji Ho in that fat suit and makeup seemed a bit awkward and of course it was quite difficult to see poor Man Soo’s jilted look through all that make up and prosthetics. The first few episodes were more comedic but as the story progresses, I found that there were many facets that are touching. At first you will see Soo Jung as a witch with a capital B but she is self reliant and confident in herself. I knew that despite her manner and her bullying of Man Soo that she truly did have feelings for him even when he was still the overweight Man Soo who worshipped the ground she walked on. I was really glad when they showed the flashback how Soo Jung went back to find the ring he gave her which she had purposely thrown away in front of him.
At first, Soo Jung shows all her selfish and money loving side but as the series progresses, we discover that she is more than that. Despite the numerous bad luck she encounters and the problem she bears, she thrives to work hard for her family. As we see her embrace the love she has in her heart, we see a different side of her, someone who finally finds her happiness despite still thriving to ensure she is able to fulfill her duty as a daughter and sister.
Man Soo, the lovable guy who could not lie and would have done everything Soo Jung asked him to could not let go of the hurt she had caused him by leaving him at the altar. He went to America, lost weight and became successful for her, in order to have his revenge. Upon seeing her again, he is convinced that she is the same selfish, manipulative woman who had hurt him deeply. As his scheme unfolds, as he begins to understand Soo Jung - the person and not Soo Jung - the woman she portrays, he has to admit that despite everything he’s been through, he still loves her and has forgiven her.
Uhm Jung Hwa as Soo Jung was brilliant, playing a witch with a heart, I could see and feel it when she is scornful, when she is confused, when she has conflicting emotions, when she says things she doesn’t really mean. Oh Ji Ho wasn’t too consistent, I was hoping for more or maybe because Jung Hwa outshone him in their scenes together. Scenes that I wished Oh Ji Ho portrayed more for Man Soo was when Soo Jung jilts Woo Tak and came to Man Soo despite his debts because she loves him, Man Soo’s expression wasn’t enough for me, I mean this is the girl he loves for 10 years, the girls he thought about for 8 years to get his revenge, I was expecting his floodgates to open, well more…But I did like how Man Soo is smiling goofily when he is together with Soo Jung. As Man Soo says they just need to feed on their love!
The actress playing Da Shun did try though but not enough but I really hated this type of character, playing up innocent girl but is actually a two face thorn in your side. The character development of Woo Tak didn’t seem to have played out smoothly especially when he began depicting his sincerity towards Soo Jung but I’m glad he was a good man in the end, who changed because he wanted to be worthy of Soo Jung.
And Soo Jung’s best friends are real friends despite what they say and fight with each other but their friendship bond remains, such true friends despite the cattiness and jibes they shoved each other. Yeung Ae and ,…. Were a laugh, sometimes cute and no doubt meant to be together. I can just imagine the pair meeting up with Man Soo and Soo Jung for dinner. Would be a riot!
All in all, I enjoyed watching this drama, of course there are some parts that are lame, some parts didn’t really come out as funny, some parts are a bit slow but watch it for Soo Jung’s journey towards her being true to her own heart, or watch it for Man Soo’s dimples. I do so love happy beginnings!
