So I'm in Sydney, in case you weren't aware. I made somewhat of a deal about it on facebook but I forget that fb selectively filters your feed. And I might not have been deemed important enough to get through.
So yeap. Sydney.
Our client Canon Australia is rolling out with their implementation in the coming months so they wanted one of us to be on site for a while. Two months to be (approximately) exact. And my company chose me. Even though I've never seen this project before. And I'm expected to be technical design lead. Yay!
Sydney is fucking awesome. Well technically I'm in Chatswood, just north of Sydney proper. Still, it's damn awesome. There's a giant mall just outside of my hotel with lots of cool shops and places to eat. There's also a train station that takes me to and from work everyday. Hawesome.
My hotel room is great. Well it's more of a suite than a room. Full kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, closet, living room, and washer and dryer! It's a nice place to come home to after a day of work.
The workday is pretty well-structured. I get in at 8 and leave at 5. A lot different than back home where you come in at whenever and leave at whenever, as long as you get your work done.
It's very similar to America, but it's the little things, you know? The biggest little thing is the fact that they drive on the left. It makes crossing the street a harrowing endeavor. Peppers are called capsicums. Dollar bills are dollar notes. "How are you going" is a common greeting.
During my first weekend I took the train to the city and then a ferry to Taronga Zoo. I went on a special tour that took me behind the scenes on a lot of exhibits. I got face to face with a baby koala, pet a wallaby and a couple billbies, and held a tiny feather tail glider. Oh and take a picture with an owl. It was definitely the best zoo experience of my life!
http://imgur.com/a/4KLJT#wFpRH That first picture is one of my favorites. You can see the city -- including the opera house -- in the background.
In two weeks I'm going to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the weekend after that I'm going to see the Vienna Philharmonic at the Opera House and then the week after that I'm seeing the Sydney Orchestra play Dvorak's New World Symphony at the Opera House! I think when it starts warming up even more I'm gonna trek out to Bondi Beach.
Life is good.
