I thought maybe ... if it's not the Malnosso offering, the journals might work on the other side of the portal. Even if only for a few seconds.

It'd be good if the people that went could confirm for us what was on the other side.

You're forgetting that the letters indicate that we will have no memory of this place. The person on the other side will not know what the journal is.
