dousing out the imaginary.
sounding out the imagery.
fading into shutter's and shapes.
fitting into flutter's and escape's.
i am the proud owner of a
sony cybershot dsc-v1 i have resisted drooling on it, but only by a small margin. i have been playing with it all night. i have managed to take some stellar shots of some very mundane subjects as i have nothing else to point the damn thing at.
first impressions upon seeing/groping/molesting it in the store.
lcd screen smaller then i thought - minus one cool point. actual length and mass of the zoom lens longer (more cumbersome) then expected - minus one. shutter (clicky-to-take-picky) button in the middle of a settings dial and not the most ergonomic - minus one.
amazing amount of easy to use, well designed buttons - plus one cool point. way smaller then expected - plus one. way lighter then expected - plus one. options to-die-four-hundred - plus one.
still came out on top. which is what i expected from oogaling over it on sony's startlingly well made site. after a night of testing, smooth talking, poking, prodding and doing everything short of something that would void the warranty i have come to this conclusion. my new toy is as slick as butter on teflon, as fresh and clean as fabreeze on a spring waterfall, and is as sexy as it is sensitive.
best part is since we got it at the navy exchange (a kind of military department store generally on base) we saved about a hundred dollars. it was a display model, which i almost couldn't deal with but after i inspected it and made sure the warranty was still valid and got ten percent off (roughly fifty dollars) it worked out. the exchange also sold it for fifteen dollars less and we saved another thirty five dollars but not having to pay tax. we threw thirty bucks of that back into an extended warranty. the manual and software cd we're not to be found either so both will take about twenty dollars to fix in the end, and only because i'm a compleatest.
field testing antics ensue. movie mode is fun and very useful/up to par. the battery lasts a little longer then i expected. the memory card holds about as many pictures i expected. night mode (infra-red) is spooky, has a limited range and field but does see in the dark which is way to cool. rapid burst (three pictures in three seconds) sucks but oh well, i can shoot movies and rip them into frames if need be. the holographic imaging thingie does actually shoot a host of cross patterned red laser things at the "target" for a second. this is supposed to adjust focus and light and what not. i probably does something cool but i can't tell, it does create a priceless look on surprised human subjects faces. at this point in time you would take any technical term to mean cool-as-candy right? zoom is good. mind meld with the machine (ease of use) is pretty fast. i have used a sony digital camera before so my learning angle may be increased but it seems easy to navigate.
the absolute best part though is that transferring pictures to my computer couldn't be easier. when we bought this computer i was really hooked because it had all this extra crap i though one day i might use. one of those things i deemed especially useful was the memory stick (four different slots for four different kinds of) reader. i was correct in my theory. i pop my memory card of of the camera, seductively slip it into the correct port and quicker then you can say "interface" (oh kay it may be longer then that, say "exchanging naughty signals" instead) a new window opens asking me what i want to do, well i want to upon the folder, it opens and there are my pictures. no mess, no fuss, no drivers, no unnecessary applications. i don't think that's going to work with the other (256 meg pro media) memory card i get, so i tried the usb2 interface and it worked a slight bit slower but just as bdsm free.
the pictures for all their 5.0 mega pixel glory, are clear, crisp, but still warm. i could probably blow one up to poster size and it wouldn't be all that distorted. i may try that sometime. i could take a self portrait of the camera and make a poster out of it. how philosophically decedent is that?
we still have to buy the upgraded memory card, and an extra battery. i haven't found a case i like except on the sony site so i think i'm stuck on it. it's very militant looking, so i think it will match my wardrobe well. because you know, my camera and i are going to be in some tough spots. like war torn south georgia and the wasteland that is the disney world empire. i will be knee deep in fried chicken and running from the local militia of costumed rebels.
i am happy that we got it before savannah. that is entirely due to my lovely, understanding wife. savannah is going to be the perfect trek to break the camera in. it gives me a chance to get use to having such a great little machine. i think jane will kick me out of bed if she finds me snuggled up to it like a plush animal. oh well, it will be all right residing in the computer room. the two will make great room mates.
go now... while you still have time.
