3. New Friend

“So Changmin-hyung’s out to see his friend to apologize? Does he live nearby?” Jinki asked before biting down his smoked salmon in pesto paste. “I really prefer chicken.” He muttered afterwards sighing in complete disappointment making the woman beside her chuckle.

“Maybe and no, he’s actually a train and a long walk from here-Salmon’s what’s left of the fridge after our little feast yesterday. I’ll buy the grocery after I finish these files.” Mrs. Shim mumbled, lifting her unstylish wire rimmed-glasses on the bridge of her nose. She was working with her laptop on top of the counter top where the young lad had been sitting on, feet dangling on the almost floating table with only a cylindrical pillar to support it at the middle.

“Ah! I’ll do that!” Jinki jumped off the countertop, one hand on top of his other hand presenting his palm ‘til it collided in tune of his brilliant idea. “I’ll buy the grocery, umma. You just concentrate on your paper work and I’ll do the hard work~” Jinki said sleazily, wild brunette eyebrows wiggling along with his overly excited smile.

“Oh little dubu…” the voice of Mrs. Shim had long been gone when he dashed out the back door. He knew his second umma won’t even let him do any hard work like always. Jinki thought it’s sweet but he’s a ‘man’ now and it’s kinda weird that the mother-and-son Shims are still thinking of him as the same thirteen year old Jinki they can spoil, give candies when upset or… threat those delicious looking crepe near that convenience store.

“Annyeong ahjumma!” Jinki excitedly greeted to the middle-aged sales woman in pink checkered-apron after arriving at the nearest convenience store he asked the cab to take him to which was really near, he think he could’ve walked there.

“What do you want kid?” she asked coolly that the young lad swiftly remembered he’s being a ‘man’ for five seconds at least before getting hypnotized by the cute little yellow bunny sprinkles.

“I’ll get one Easter bunny crepe and one pistachio almond crepe, to go.” He ordered without looking at the woman who chuckled at him softly as he confounded his mind to the contours of the sprinkles and how it looked the same as if he didn’t know those are most likely done mechanically.

The sizzle of the pan with the crepe mix snapped Jinki to what he really needed to do and the woman chuckled again at him while shooing him away to go buy what he needs to the store behind her stall while she prepares his crepes.

Carrots, potatoes, cabbage, two plastics full of chicken and a lot more of the things he just think he should buy ended up piling him with eight full bags of groceries that the middle-aged man at the store ended up helping him carry them down the stairs because he looked like he’s gonna trip with his wobbly legs.

“Thank you very much ahjussi!”  Jinki bowed lowly, head almost reaching his knees.

“Want me to call a cab, kid?”

“No, thank you. I’m short on cash now. I’ll just walk my way back.” Jinki explained sounding with utmost reassurance that the old man could only frown as a protest.

“Yeobo, it’s alright. Isn’t lil’ Min coming to help you with the store? He could help this young man.”

Jinki only blinked as the old couple talk about ‘Min’ who was going to help him with his grocery bags that he didn’t actually need. That’s what he thought. He even tried carrying them by himself and practically got slapped by the fact he does need help, unless he wanted to crawl his way back home.

Admitting you need a little help is manly. Jinki nods to himself before looking at the woman who patted him out of his train of thoughts of his manliness and all.

“Thank you-Oh I only ordered two!” Jinki stated, surprised and the woman chuckled to him and shrugged.

“It’s for free, kid. I thought you want to buy our whole store anyway.” She patted him right after she gave him his crepes. The young lad accepted them quite hesitantly at first before he found himself smiling with the fact he has two Easter bunny crepes now.

“Thank you so much, ahjumma. I shall be your customer everyday!” Jinki says with enthusiasm and honesty but his face slumped with the old lady’s face that had gone with a terribly sour face as if she somehow swallowed the lemon she uses for the cream.

“I’m actually stopping the store since me and my husband will be out for vacation,” the old woman explained already wishing she had not told him something equal to that because he looks like he’s gonna cry.

“Oh…” Jinki broke under his breath and he tried his best not to sound too disappointed. “T-that’s ok! Well, look at the time, I gotta go!”

Jinki didn’t look at old woman anymore after he snag the crepe and place it securely over his mouth while his hands got full with groceries, he miraculously hand carried as he stormed away with alarm and frustration that he couldn’t hold his disappointment into place. The moment he turned to a corner he was sniffing for a lost that is really, really childish.  He just couldn’t help it though. Something about losing something just makes him feel like a broken glass no matter how simple they are. He was really a softy and he always has been. He hated it.

“Hey wait up!” a very low toned voice called from behind and at some point that only made Jinki ran in speed than to stop as if he was sure enough that person is a bad news.

He’s been dodgy to people and he wondered if it was some bully abruptly. He was almost conned by men before, out of his lunch money and he couldn’t forget that. He was just lucky Jaejoong was there to save him and now he’s not around, talking to a stranger or that unfamiliar voice calling to him, if it’s actually him his calling at the moment because there’s a park, clearly isn’t the best idea.  He trusted that guts with all his heart until that guy caught up with him, panting and glistening with body sweat, looking at him with his eyes so wide Jinki would’ve poked them close.

“Hey, I’m from the grocery store. Grandma had told me to catch up with you,” He says with slight irritation. He looked so sweaty but he wasn’t even panting like Jinki who finally felt exhaustion.

Jinki just made an ‘O’ with his mouth as an acknowledgement when he found out he was unable to control his panting.

“So… want a help with that?”  The tall lad asked leaning forward in attempt to hold some bags even the obviously guarded boy has yet to reply.

“Aww!” Jinki yelped after the grocery bags had been taken away. The heavy bags had marked his hand with deep red lines.

“Are you alright?”  the guy asked and he placed the bags down to examine the reddened hand of the shorter lad. “Ah!” he gasped shortly when an idea popped out of his head and he pulled the crepes plastic bag from Jinki’s mouth and placed it firmly down his hands.

Jinki blushed when the taller male had caught his hands and blushed further when he moaned from the icy feeling of the bags on his hands. He thought for a second that the boy blushed as well so he quickly retreats his hands and tried to leave when he was spun around by his shoulder with a no longer blushing guy.

“Walk slower, can you?”

“Okay…”

It was an awkward walk but Jinki couldn’t melt the ice between them because he was a stranger and he was a stranger to the guy too. He had gone tired memorizing the streets they passed because he did memorize that already when he was in the cab going to the convenient store.

“You’re weird,” the guy spoke and Jinki blinked at him with confusion. “Could you carry those crepes normally? You look like you’re offering them to the gods or something,”

Jinki gasped upon that realization that took him exactly five seconds to take in. He was carrying the crepes with his hands lifted right above his chest, the way the tall lad beside him had left it.

“Sorry,” he musters up with the only word he had managed to say, sighing in defeat.

“Want to rest?”

“Huh?”

“Since you’re not helping me carry these, could we sit there for awhile?” the guy pointed to an empty playground a block away from their real destination.

“Of course! Let me carry some-Ah!”  Jinki instantly flinched with his still sore hands, almost dropping the bag he tried to snatch which were luckily caught by the guy with his index finger hooking on the handle.

“I’ll just carry them over there…” the lad shrugged, sighing softly before walking towards the bench.

Jinki felt so pathetic he went there mentally cursing himself for having his condition attacking him. He’s been like that and up to now he’s still the same Jinki-all-over-the-place.

“Why did your mom let you buy groceries alone? Kids shouldn’t be doing this alone because of the weight.” The guy started again, head bobbing as if to agree with his own comment. The shorter of them looked young and although they seem of the same age, who knows if he just looks mature for his age even if he’s actually younger.

“I’m not a kid…” Jinki sounded with irritation even for the fact that he was messily eating the crepes he decided to finish so he wouldn’t say or do anything stupid or pathetic. “I’m legal.”

The taller lad gaped and looked at him with sheer disbelief that if he was legal then he was two years older than he was.

“That’s some serious shit! I’m only sixteen!” the lad burst and the other lad had a face the taller once had.

“Now that’s some serious shit! How come you’re taller?!”

“How come you’re shorter?”

“Big eyes!”

“No eyes!”

Jinki blinked for awhile and then started laughing. He laughed so hard that the guy suddenly laughed along.

“You sound like my friend,” Jinki said in between his softened chuckles.

“We talk like we’re friends already,” the guy added, his head bobbing again.

“Yeah and I guess it’s safe to say my name now…I’m Lee Jinki and ahjumma told me you’re Min,”

“Minho, actually… Choi Minho.” The boy corrected, smiling.

Jinki find himself blushing again after realizing the guy’s definite beauty. When he realized he was caught staring he decided to smile back to lessen the awkward feeling although he wished he trip now or something to avoid any accusation.

“Ah, let’s just go to your place and take these. It’s almost lunch…” Minho says in a controlled stutter, looking away from Jinki as best as he could. His smile was somehow enticing.

“Y-yeah…” Jinki muttered a short reply, thinking that somehow this guy is now thinking his a creep for smiling like a giddy person not noticing the guy seemed to be avoiding his gazes for a different reason. The pink hue from his face was unnoticeable and Jinki isn’t the one who notices the unnoticeable things.

The sight of the house made Jinki want to thank all gods it only took five more minutes to arrive to their street and the Shim’s house was visible already.

“We’re here-“

“You live here?” Minho gaped finally looking at the shorter lad who looked at him with his signature confused look before the guy nodded.

“Is there something wrong with that?” Jinki asked completely wondering why Minho asked him as if he wasn’t allowed to live there or it’s wrong to live there.

“Well…uhm-“

“Jinki?

“Changmin-hyung…”

“Minho-ssi?”
