An MP3 Solution (Finally!)

I decided to try out keeping a web log, mostly as a way to communicate issues and technologies to my friends that I consider nifty or otherwise remarkable. I tried to start a wiki web in the past but I think the more structured Live Journal approach might be more appropriate and more accessible. Plus it looked like fun!

So now for my first post.

I have been keenly following products that link the digital music collection sitting on your home computer's hard drive with your home stereo system. Most of these take the form of a stereo component with its own display and user interface. Some are quite neat, like the SqueezeBox, HomePod, Roku and just recently the SoundBlaster.

I have held back from buying one of these products because they're just a little too complicated for my taste. They require a server process running on the computer serving the MP3 files. They have their own user interfaces, displays, remote control, etc. Some have their own play lists. Well, I already use iTunes and I like it. Plus, at home all I have is a Powerbook which is usually in the same room as I am.

Enter Apple's new Airport Express with AirTunes. It simply connects iTunes to your home stereo or powered speakers via wi-fi. Anything you can play in iTunes is now playable on a real home audio system. It costs about half as much as the other products. Just what I needed. I ordered one the same day they were announced.
