CHAPTER FOUR

It’s been a month since that unfortunate incident that almost took Yana’s life and shook the lives of everyone around her. Luckily, she survived and slowly starting to get back to normal. The incident remains discreet from the eyes and ears of the media and fans, her agency took great care of damage control to avoid getting known by the public.

After spending nine days in the hospital, she was given a go signal by her doctors to go home and rest for a whole month. Her mother went straight home to Tokyo after receiving the call from her manager and has been taking care of her since. Much to Yana’s annoyance, her mother is sticking to her even inside the bathroom, afraid that she might do it again. She reassured her every now and then that it will not happen again.

Yana’s been feeling guilty since she woke up that morning. The first person she saw was her mother, eyes all red and puffy from crying. Her manager, Eri, is visibly exhausted and worried. She never wanted to take her life, she just wanted to erase the pain she felt but she overdid it, resulting in making her loved ones worry about her. She tried to assure them that she’s okay through her smile but it doesn’t seem to help, her mother, Eri and all her friends are still equipped with that uneasy look in their faces. No one dare to mention Park Yoochun’s name, afraid that it may trigger her emotionally. For Yana, she tried to erase him and the little memories they had in that short amount of time they spent together. It wasn’t an easy process, she sometimes cry herself to sleep when the slightest memories to tried to escape the wall she built in her mind. But Yana is a strong person, she set her priorities straight and made her career her number one priority. Now, a month later, she slowly trying to get back to her life before, vowing that she would never dare to make a man ruin her life again.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Yana heard her mother’s voice from the kitchen. Her mother surveyed her from head to toe and raised her eyebrow after looking back at her face.

“Just for a walk then maybe I’ll grab some coffee on my way back.” Yana smiled obliviously while fixing her newsboy cap and her small shoulder bag. She’s wearing a plain black shirt with a grey scarf around her neck, a skinny jeans and a pair of flip-flops.

“What?” Her mother sharply says.

“Mom, I need some air. I’m getting bored in this house and today’s weather is perfect to go out and walk.” Yana reasons out and walks over the glass window to see the vibrant streets outside.

“Okay then, I’m coming with you. I’ll just change my clothes.” Her mother says while removing her apron.

“Mom, I want to be alone.” Yana carefully says making her mother stop in front of her. She’s sick of her mother following everywhere she goes and she wanted some ‘me’ time today, she never had that since she left the hospital weeks ago.

“No way.” Her mother disagrees and walks into the bedroom to change, Yana follows after her.

“Mom, I’ve been good, right?” Yana says while taking her mother’s hands. “You have to say that I’m much better now compared two weeks ago.” She waited for her mother’s reaction.

“But Yana-” Her mother still contests but Yana stops her midway.

“I promise I won’t do anything stupid. I learned my lesson and I don’t want to put you and my friends from that pain again.” Yana truthfully says and her mother looks like she’ll give in. “I’ll mail you every minute of my whereabouts if that can keep you from worrying too much.” She laughs.

“Okay. You win, just keep your promise.” Her mother says.

“I will.” Yana smiles and gave her a hug before walking out of the door.

Yana just stayed near to avoid her mother from excessive worrying, strolling along the wide sidewalk of Omotesando and entering every store she finds interesting. The spring season is starting and some boutiques are already changing their items to spring outfits and she can’t help to buy some cute finds. Some saleslady recognized her behind the newsboy cap she’s wearing, telling her that they missed seeing her on TV and hoping that she can get well soon, she just gave them a shy smile. Her agency told the public that her doctor advised her to rest for a whole month due to overfatigue and stress. Some believed their cover-up and others, like gossip magazines, speculated something blown out of proportion like getting pregnant and secretly getting married abroad. She just laughed it off, luckily, nobody guessed closely to what really happened.

After strolling around for almost an hour and a few shopping bags in her hand, Yana decided to sit down for coffee. Entering the nearest Starbucks, she placed her order and settled on a secluded corner of the coffee shop. It just three in the afternoon on a Wednesday so the place is not that packed with people. Munching on her chocolate muffin and scanning on the ViVi magazine she bought earlier, Yana is lost on her own world, not minding the constant flashes of cameras and gushing of young people from afar, in fact, she kinda missed it. Staying home for almost a month is definitely unexciting and boring, she can’t wait until she gets back to work which isn’t that far away because she’s going to shoot a magazine spread in three days and work is going to continue after that.

Getting too indulged in the magazine, Yana is unaware of a certain person’s presence making all her onlookers turn their attention to him. A young girl around fifteen suddenly squealed in glee and it finally gets her attention. By the counter is man in trucker hat and sunglasses, dressed in denim jacket, tattered black jeans and metallic silver, high-cut Chuck Taylors. The way he dresses is definitely a scene stealer. Yana grabs her eyeglasses to take a clearer look at the man’s face and it didn’t take her long to figure out who he is. She just sniggered by herself at how he is so flashy and went back to her magazine.

The store’s security took care of the group of young girls and manages to make them wait outside, the store went back to its usual quiet and calm atmosphere.

“Ahem.”  Yana heard someone clearing out his throat and she looks up to see him. Much to her surprise, the flashy looking guy over the counter was standing across her table.

“Matsumoto-san.” Yana stood up to greet him and he smiled.

“Can I join you?” Matsumoto Jun asked and Yana points to the group of young girls looking outside. “As if they would see anything malicious, right?” Jun joked making Yana laugh as she signalled him to take a seat opposite her.

There was a certain tense air between them. Yana knows that Matsumoto Jun is one of those few people who knew of the real reason of her hiatus. Ryo told to her that during that night she woke up, Jin and him were partying together with Jun and when they heard that she woke up, they instantly went over to the hospital, dragging their drunk senpai with them. She never saw him in the hospital, though but he did saw her behind the Intensive Care Unit’s glass windows.

“I’m very sorry for troubling you that night.” Yana started making Jun raised one eyebrow in confusion. “In the hospital.” Yana says and Jun nods his head. “Seeing me in that state, I’m very sorry.” She apologizes, uncertain if this is the right time to talk about it.

Jun suddenly remembers that night, he was very drunk and Ryo and Jin insisted him to just stay and sleep in the car but his curiosity leads him into sneakily following behind two. He finds himself in the Intensive Care Unit and saw Izumi Yana, almost lifelessly lying on the hospital bed with various tubes connected to her body, her beautiful face is very pale and fragile. His drunkenness almost disappeared with that sight of her. He bombarded his kouhais with questions on what happened to her, the two were hesitant but gave up in the end.

“You don’t have to apologize.” Jun reassured her. “Seeing you well now is all that matters.” He adds sincerely.

Yana nodded and smiled, she didn’t say anything, too amused at how Matsumoto Jun is so nice and friendly towards her, just like how he were when they first met.

“I heard you’re going back to work.” Jun says, shifting the topic. He figures that such heavy topic would do no good to her.

“You do?” Yana says in confusion. “From whom? Jin? Ryo?” she adds.

Jun took a sip from his iced coffee before answering her question. “No. From the one you’re working with in your new drama.” He grins playfully.

How come she forgets that. Yana is signed for a contract with Fuji TV’s spring drama for the year, her second time acting. This time though, it’s much bigger project than the first one. For one, they are placed in the getsu 9 slot. She doesn’t have many problems with it, the storyline is well put together, the production team are one of the best and her co-stars are big names, except for one.

“Really? I bet he’s really happy to hear that I’m working with him.” Yana sarcastically says with a sour expression on her face. “Seeing your face a while ago, I say he kiss and tell that elevator story.” She watched Jun’s reaction from the side of her eyes.

“He did.” Jun confessed. “Vaguely.” He added while examining her reaction.

“Explain vaguely.” Yana says, raising her eyebrows while resting her elbow on the table to take a closer look at him.

Jun snorts at her reaction, “Nothing too graphical. Don’t worry, our impression about you didn’t change after what Nino told us.”

“Whatever he told you, I’m going to make sure that it wouldn’t happen again.” Yana firmly says.

“Three months filming a romantic drama with the biggest flirt of Arashi? I hope you don’t eat your words, Izumi-san.” Jun didn’t look amused while cheekily smiling at her.

Yana makes a kind of snorting noise with what he said. “I’m surprised that he took the role, considering that I’m going to be in it.”

“When he heard it’s a Getsuku, he accepts it right away, without knowing about the story or his co-stars.” Jun answers her question. “Imagine the brat’s reaction when he found out that he’s working with you.” He paused to give way for his laughter. “It was priceless! I wish I recorded it with my cell phone.”

Yana watched him laughing heartily in his seat, his eyes are scrunching so much as she can see the creasing lines it created on the sides. She finds it cute, Matsumoto Jun showing her his unfamiliar receptive side.

“I can imagine.” Yana commented. “I guess I still annoy him until now.” She says.

“More than annoyance, Nino is just bitter about what happened. We’ve been reminding him that he can’t get all the girls he wanted.” Jun laughs and Yana just stares at him, she’s starting to admire his laughter.

“Any advice on how can we pass that three months without trouble?” Yana asked casually and Jun smiled at her.

“I think the best way to deal with Nino is to be straight and frank. Tell him that you don’t want any trouble and you just want to work on the drama smoothly and professionally and you don’t want past incidents to affect the work environment. He may be a brat at first and you may have to work extra hard but I’m sure you can handle him. After all, I think he still likes you so that’s an added point.”

Three months after that elevator incident during Kouhaku, the rest of Arashi thinks that Nino still likes Izumi Yana even though everything he says about her is negative. They would tease him and make fun of his whining, in the end he would get pissed off and would settle quietly in one corner to play his DS. Jun would join the fun and teasing but little did the rest know that he has also developed a liking towards her. It wasn’t like Nino and he never plans to ask her out for a date. In fact, if only Nino admits that he still likes her, Jun would probably encouraged him to pursue her.

“That’s more than what I expected but thanks. I’m glad I asked.” Yana was shocked at how detailed his answer is.

“No problem. I can help you too, you know.” Jun suggested.

“That’s very nice of you, thank you.” Yana says with a smile. “I never thought I would be able to see that sunny and unrestrained side of yours, Matsumoto-san.” She says gently. Jun gives a guarded laugh, not so much sure on how he will respond to that. “I always thought that what you do on TV is just for the show. I have this image that you’re a real life Domyouji in private, cold-blooded and harsh. But after you talked to me and apologized in behalf of that bratty Ninomiya during Kouhaku, I began to doubt my judgement and I feel so terrible for thinking that way about you.” She warily says, avoiding the eyes that are looking straight at her.

“I get that a lot. I guess I’m good at fooling people.” Jun lightly puts in, not minding anything about what she says. It’s as if he’s been hearing that redundantly over the span of eleven years since he entered the entertainment industry.

Jun’s mobile phone began ringing and he reads the message. “I wanted to talk more but my manager’s car is pulling out outside to pick me up.” He says as he sips the remaining iced coffee.

“Go ahead. I’m sure you’re very busy.” Yana says understandingly.

“I’m filming for VS Arashi later, I can start helping you with Nino.” Jun cheekily says while standing up from his seat, Yana smiled too as she stood up.

“I appreciate it.” Yana says holding out her hand to his for a handshake. Jun took it and shakes her hand casually.

“No problem. Best of luck.” Jun gave her his best impression of “Ninomiya salute” before walking out of the store.

Yana watched him walk outside, the young girl are still there and started to crown his way to them when his manager and another guy that’s probably his PA shove the girls away. She remained still until he’s out of sight, dropping back to her seat when the commotion began to low down.
