An event conflicts with my son's hockey practice on Sunday and it appeared that more than half the people will attend the conflicting event. To determine whether or not to hold practice I sent around a note asking people to send me a note if they are planning to come, reasoning that that would decrease overall effort as fewer people would have to send a mail.
However, so far, five people have sent a note indicating they're not planning to come, despite the formulation of my request. In retrospect I should have just asked them to let me know, as always, if they're not coming. That would have been the social convention anyway since this is a long scheduled practice. Lesson learned: Don't try to upend a social convention unless potential payoff is very high and even then, don't expect it to work well the first time.
