RON IS AN ABUSER. SRSLY.
So I might be talking about something that is long over and forgotten, but I don’t care because I just found it. There’s this editorial, over at MuggleNet called
Ron Loves Hermione and He Will ___ Her. First I thought, HA, THAT’S DIRTY! And then when I finished reading it I thought, that’s really, really fucking dirty.
In the end the full title is given: Ron Loves Hermione and He Will HIT Her.
You know what [as Henry would say] gripes my cookies the most? This woman thinks she is all pro-awareness, claiming that okay, Ron IS ONLY a fictional character but please women, take notice of the fifteen signs of an abuser. Do not be held captive by an abuser.
You what this so called editorial is doing? It is undermining women who have been abused. Please, let me give you some examples:
HBP pg. 172: Hermione tries to do her job as prefect.
“Fanged Frisbees are banned, hand it over,” she told him sternly. The scowling boy handed over the snarling Frisbee, ducked under her arm, and took off after his friends. Ron waited for him to vanish, then tugged the Frisbee from Hermione’s grip.
“Excellent, I’ve always wanted one of these.”
Hermione’s remonstration was drowned by a loud giggle…
This isn’t about taking away a Frisbee, it’s about taking away Hermione’s power.
OMG. Ron is an adolescent. He is the most adolescent adolescent of the trio. Of possibly most Harry Potter characters. HE IS A BOY. I don’t know what else to say to that.
HBP pg. 218: Ron argues with Hermione about visiting Hagrid.
“We’ve got to go and explain,” said Hermione…
“We’ve got Quidditch tryouts this morning!” said Ron. “And we’re supposed to be practicing that Aguamenti Charm from Flitwick! Anyway, explain what? How are we going to tell him we hated his stupid subject?”
… “I hate not talking to Hagrid,” said Hermione, looking upset.
“We’ll go down after Quidditch,” Harry assured her.
Is Ron trying to cut Hermione’s contact with Hagrid?
GASP. SHOCK. HORROR. First Hagrid, next HER PARENTS. HARRY. It’s the only explanation for this scenario. Not that, oh I don’t know; Ron wants to avoid confrontation with Hagrid? Because as a Ron fan who accepts the boy has many faults - I know that Ron is very bad about facing an issue. No, that wouldn’t explain it. It must be that Ron is trying to cut off Hermione’s contact with the outside world. That MUST be it.
Look, I know this is, on first glance, a really stupid editorial that possibly speaks for 1% of the fandom. I think the combined Ron-hate AND this does my head in a bit. I mean, it’s very clear that this girl just isn’t a fan of Ron or the pairing. Always suggesting that Hermione could do so much better. Asking that, if Hermione likes Ron why would she giggle when he is being made fun of? Uh DUH because it’s funny? Suggesting that all those times Ron makes light of Hermione’s broad knowledge is making her of lesser value - which is such nonsense. He’s intimidated by her, sometimes, he feels UNWORTHY.
If you’re going to have something published on a site that is well renowned and well documented by JKR HERSELF - than please, try and know the characters better. Don’t use them for some misguided cause. Don’t bash them [take note: she suggests Ron is violent because he hit Harry whilst under that love potion Romilda Vane put in the chocolate cauldrons etc], pulling out random passages and using them to your advantage.
Underneath the crap readers have to endure reading that editorial is actually a really important message. It’s like fighting for peace: it’s redundant. Grrr.
CWRPS RECS
On a happier note! Not counting all the BigBang fics I haven’t actually read yet, there’s a few little gems I’ve come across recently. If you haven’t gotten round to them.
Title: The Inevitability of Desire.
Author:
notthequiettypePairing: Jared/Jensen
Rating: adult.
Because: I’m going to guess most of you have read it, but regardless. It’s an amazing fic, that journeys through the boys slow ‘getting together’ period. After the show is cancelled they go to great lengths to stay in touch, and realise that even without the show they were, well, inevitable. One of those stories you read and simultaneously think, damn that was good, and damn I’m so inadequate.
In the fifth month, Jensen remembers why Jared is his best friend and why that's the best and most excruciating thing in his life. Title: Extra, extra, [read all about it].
Author:
sarcasticpixiePairing: Jared/Jensen
Rating: PG13
Because: this fic is so much fun. It’s in epistolary style, with snippets of articles, and text messages and things like that. These sort of fics can sometimes miss target but this one doesn’t. The author executes each style with complete aptitude, and it moves smoothly, opens up bit by bit. It’s awesome.
From a greeting card found on the desk of Sera Gamble, 22 December 2007:
Happy Holidays!
(Jared wanted to say “Merry Christmas,” but we decided to be nondenominational about it.)
Best wishes,
Jared, Jensen, Harley, and Sadie SUPERNATURAL!
All Hell Breaks Loose Part One airs on Australian TV tonight. I’m basically in knots just thinking about it, and next week! Jensen’s little face. Aaaah. In conclusion:
BRING ME SOME PIE. LOVE ME SOME PIE.
WHO HAS A SOUND BYTE OF THAT? OR WHO CAN TELL ME HOW TO MAKE SOUND BYTES BECAUSE I HAVE THE EPISODE ON MY HARD DRIVE? I’LL LOVE YOU FOREVER?!
