I'm on the fence about 1970s John, but I think he performed the scenes that needed to really pop well (for me, the key moment was when John stepped up to Dean and insisted that he wasn't useless, even if he was a dupe). I saw so much of the character's future in that moment. I feel I should be fair to the actor though and admit that JDM doesn't really do it for me as John Winchester either. He's fine, but I find he doesn't quite inhabit the role for me like Jared and Jensen do theirs. Ramble.
I quite liked Castiel's declaration of friendship toward Sam, though thinking on it, I wish we'd been able to see more of it. I still think the show missed out on some fun exploring the relationship between Sam and angels, given that he'd always been the faithful brother, but I understand how that would have been clunky, narratively.
I've always loved Mary's line about angels watching over Dean; it just gets better the more we explore that mythology :D
